NORTH VANCOUVER BC June 23rd 2015 - 1957 Ponton driving around the world

June 8th, 2015
For some time, our members have been following online, an epic endeavour of a New Zealand couple traveling around the world, without sponsorship, in a 1957 MB 220s, sedan, a true testament to the endurance of the car – and their marriage!
“ Imagine driving across five continents through unforgiving terrain in a 1957 Mercedes Benz.
In 2014, after some three years of preparation, seasoned motoring pioneers Fred and Elisabeth (Smits) will embark on a ground breaking worldwide driving adventure. They will venture some 90,000 miles from New Zealand, through the Americas, Europe and Russia, by way of India and Malaysia to Australia before returning home in 2019.
…The team will brave inclement weather and challenging driving conditions and will spend five years living in a specialised, light-weight tent-trailer, all in the name of adventure.”

“Classicstrider”, as the Smits call themselves on Facebook, are scheduled to come to Vancouver, between June 19th, and 28th, of this year.
You are invited to attend their unique, one hour, presentation, June 23rd, 7:00pm, in the North Vancouver School Board Office, 2121 Lonsdale Avenue. Refreshments will be served.
“The presentation talks about our plans, how we came up with that stupid idea of driving around the world in a 57 year old Mercedes (and loving it), our go/no go decision path, the planned route, preparations of the car and the trailer, search for new parts, modifications/improvements to the car and trailer to cope with the various climates we will pass through, safety and security, insurances, importation and different rules and regulations of the various countries we will travel through etc.”
Fred and Elisabeth will display their car, at the German Car Festival, the following weekend, at Waterfront Park, Sunday June 28th, in North Vancouver.
