Diagnostics not covered under MB Extended Warranty?
I moved from Boston to Laguna Niguel (South LA) recently. I brought my two vehicles with me. They are a MY14 ML550 with 97k miles and MY14 E250 BT with 107k miles. I bought both new and been meticulously serviced at the Mercedes Benz of Boston their entire life(From wiper blades to tires). I have had two other Mercedes vehicles in the past. My E250 had a check engine light on Tuesday and I brought it in to Fletcher Jones today. They asked me for a $219 diagnostic fee. I have not once paid a diagnostic fee for a car under Mercedes Benz warranty. I understand certain items are not covered by the warranty and I expect to pay for those. I told them to cancel my appointment and bring my vehicle back. Previously I had my ML550’s breaks replaced at FJ and they tried the same thing. They said they need to charge $150 for the diagnostics. I told them you know the breaks are gone. Why do you need the diagnostics for? They said they will waive it but this time I didn’t even want to argue. They lost my trust. Am I wrong here? Does the MB warranty work differently in Massachusetts and California?

Interesting — because the New Car ELW has an extremely limited set of exclusions, and none of those should be related to your issue, I'm surprised they wanted to authorize a diagnostic fee. But hey, I guess it's possible — perhaps they can't bill the diagnostic time to MB if they can't find it, or they were really going with the "incase it's not covered..." Glad it's all fixed anyway.
