I used to think the same thing...
Until I owned one. I bought a used 1991 300GE (long wheel base) with a BRABUS 3.6 engine from my Dad's business partner. This was back in 1997. It already had 100,000 KM on it, but it drove like a dream. I'm no stranger to new/modern cars. I used to own a 1997 BMW M3 and now I have a 99 BMW M Roadster. My dad and I bought my mom a 2000 S500 when it first came out.
The 2002 G500 is an incredible investment. You can comfortably expect it to run in excellent condition well through 2012. My 300GE was over 10 years old when I wrecked it, but the only problems it had ever had were due to abuse off-road.
As far as being top-heavy, it isn't. It handles lateral grades of up to 54% and is great on the road. It is the top choice of most of the royal families in the Middle East, and the bullet-proof versions are very popular in Japan and in Russian among...well...business men.
It's a real mercedes benz. Don't let the look fool you. It's purely a vehicle that places function ahead of form.

Is it worth it?
I found a 1997 s500 with 163,000 miles. It costs $4,800. I got it checked out and it will need repairs that will cost me up to $4,000 or more. And im worried about how much future things will cost. Is it worth the buy?
