Rear Parktronic dealer opinion...

Hey all,

I've been e-mailing my dealer about adding the rear park assist option, and this is what I was e-mailed back:

Dear Lester, I have been thinking about your request and feel that even though the parts may be available I would discourage you from letting anyone tamper with the wiring of the vehicle. In my opinion and experience I have never seen this option work well after having been added. Futhurmore, when you are working with wiring I fear anything could happen
and I want your vehicle to be reliable before all else. Even if this can be added you can be sure it is not done often. There is one path I will investigate and find out if it is unintrusive and I will let you know.

What do you all think about this? I really want the park assist, but not if it's going to compromise reliability. Have any of you sucessfully added this option? Results?

Thanks

........I am totally amazed that you actually asked your dealer about installing an aftermarket option, but I'm even more astonished that you expected a different answer. If you are in the USA, this must be your first benz because no one that has ever had the displeasure of dealing with MB dealers in the USa will bother to ask them the question you asked your dealer. Anything that does not come directly from the factory will make your car self destruct.........that is their standard response. With RBM of Atlanta, I had to fight to get them to install illuminated door sills. They had never heard of it even though it was in the MBUSA website as an option.

Yes, Parktronic is a factory option, not an aftermarket one. I have a parts list for this option as well:

463-542-00-23 BUZZER $58.08
463-820-08-88 ELECTRIC CABLE $105.30
463-540-72-13 CABLE HARNESS $153.12
463-540-71-13 CABLE HARNESS $191.40
463-822-01-00 BACK-UP AID $84.24
463-545-07-32 SWITCH $308.58

Am I sensing a certain amount of acerbity in your reponse? I do not see why installing a factory option should be met with contention. My family has been dealing with various Mercedes and BMW dealers for the better part of two decades, and I have not heard of any problems thus far. The only dealership that was quasi-rude to us was BMW of Manhattan; however, all the other dealers we have dealt with (Helms Brothers, Rallye Motors, Mercedes-Benz Manhattan) have been more than accomodating with any and all requests.

I find it incredible that a dealer would not comply with a request for a factory option, as it simply seems like bad business. These cars are costing upwards of $80,000, and over a period of time, customers are spending close to $1 million at a particular dealership. This should be a cause for, at the very least, understanding and cordiality. Am I wrong in my assumptions?

..............Illuminated door sill is a factory option as well, but RBM of Atlanta refused to install it until I raised hell. Then kept my car for three days while they investigated how to do it. You guys/gals have absolutely no idea about MB dealers in the USA. What I meant was that IF THE CAR DOES NOT ARRIVE TO THE DEALER WITH WHATEVER YOU WANT ALREADY INSTALLED FROM GERMANY, YOU ARE IN FOR A DIFFICULT TIME. The response the response that Lesterm got from his dealer regarding the Parktronics proves my point. While it may Astonish some of you, it does not even begin to suprise me at all. You cannot even get a dealer in the USA to agree to upgrade your phone from a time port to V60. They have absolutely no clue. I don't see this changing as the cars are becoming more and more complex.

Ted
