Buying 2003 G 500-need advice

Let me start by saying that the G 500 is my DREAM CAR. However, I can't afford a new one, so I am considering a 2003 with 70K miles for $35K. I have never owned a Mercedes, so this is all new to me. I realize that the G 500 is unlike anything else, and I love it. However, I do NOT want to buy a money pit. I am having a Mercedes technician go over it before I buy it. Question: How much maintenance should I plan to spend annually on a ten yr old G 500 with 70K miles? I welcome any and all advice, suggestions, etc. Your wisdom and experience will be extremely helpful! Many thanks.

Not sure where you're located, but the average "Mercedes technician" knows very little about the G-Class. There are only two independent - NOT dealer!! - shops in the US where I would trust their expertise and knowledge of the G-Class. One is on the Left Coast and the other is on the Right Coast.

Thanks. I live in Charlottesville, Va. Who is the best to service G 500 on the East Coast?

Wolfgang's in Tenafly, NJ. He's been working on them far longer than MBUSA has been importing them.

So...Would it be better to buy a 2003 G500 with 70,000 miles for $35k....or a 2005 G500 with 84,000 miles for $40k?

I have owned an 03 since new and have 126K miles on it. The maintenance is higher than other vehicles and things do go wrong. Parts can be obtained a lot cheaper online than at the dealerships. I would definitely budget around $1200 a year for other than routine maintenance although it won't be evenly spaced out. You can go for a few years with no issues and then be hit with a $3-4k repair bill.

Sigh. Maybe the G500 is not meant for mere mortals like me. Champagne taste, beer budget. Story of my life.

I've owned japanese cars and now own a G class, yes there's a biiiiig difference when it comes to parts, service, maintenance and so on. If you plan on maintaining a luxurious and a really solid ride by sacrificing a few thousand dollars monthly/annually depending on how clean the car is then go for it otherwise.....
