On February 10, 1979, the Gwagen assembly line in Graz, Austria started production.

Happy Anniversary, Gwagen!

What kind of badge is that on the grille of the G Wagen closest to the speaker?

PUCH. Initially, the Gwagens were badged MB and PUCH. The PUCH G's were sold in Switzerland and in Eastern Europe. Other than the badge, the trucks were identical.

PS - The factory at that time was known as Steyr-Daimler-Puch.

Thanks! I remember the G Wagen was also made under a different name at that time- just couldn't remember what it was. Kind of crazy how the G evolved from this super utilitarian military/ off road vehicle to the Beverly Hills/ Dubai status symbol it is today. (Nothing against the new G Wagens, just kind of funny how things work out- my dream would be to own a G65 in the US one day.)

Europa International in Santa Fe, NM was indeed the sole semi-official importer of the G until 2002.
