G-Class Production Codes
I've noticed that the production code for the G-Class is W463, following the style of, well, all Benzes. I'm curious though, what does this apply to? By this I mean, does the W463 code apply to the SWB, LWB, and the cabrio? Or like the A-Class with its W168 SWB and V168 LWB, are there *technically* different codes for the G-Class? Thank you for indulging me.
Come to think of it, that question has just spawned another. Are there different codes for the SWB and LWB S-Class? I know we only have the long here in the US, but I'd be curious to know if there is such a thing as the W220 and the V220?
European chassis number are of the form
WDBXXXXXXYZAAAAAA
XXXXXX is the baumaster, Y is a number, Z is a letter that represents the factory and AAAAAA is the unique number for the car.
US Chassis numbers are similar, but the XXXXXX bit (and possibly the Y) bit tell is encoded differently [including things like the model year] and are letters - rather than digits.
Now, the important bits are the baumaster - this is a 6 digit number, the first 3 digits are the model ID, such as 208, 129, 163 etc, and the next 3 are a number that represents the engine type and the body style - for instance
208374 = CLK55 coupe
2084xx = CLKxxx cabriolet
129067 = SL500 with 4 valve per cylinder engine
129068 = SL500 with 3 valve per cylinder engine
Note, that id they did a SL55 (old model), it would not necessarily be a 129374 - although I *think* the 208474 is the CLK55 cab.
OK, now to answer your questions ;-)
All G class models are 463xxx
All A class models are 168xxx
They dont seem to use the W or V or R letters in front of them when referencing them on the parts department electronics parts catalog.
Hope that helps - R
