I have read also that the 5 speed trans 02-06 is superior to the 7-speed introduced in 07...???? Another reference was made that the quality of materials of general in years prior to 07 were inferior as well..... thoughts... input?

From what I've experienced and read on this board, incremental quality improvements from 2002-2005 make W463's progressively better year over year. Though it seems less about the drivetrain, and more about the interior and quality of the electrical components and wiring. I purchased a 2003 G55 AMG with about 100K on it and slowly but surely everytime I pull a electrical connector, I am dousing it with an electrical cleaner (de-oxit D100), and reconnecting to eliminate gremlins (e.g., seat & door control module and ...so far its working.)

Some gremlins I've experienced:
1) Door/Seat controller on both front doors
2) Power window re-greasing & connector cleaning
3) Accelerator pedal value sensor - had to be replaced
4) AMG door sill for front doors not working - still have not figured out what Im gonna do
5) Rear diff grinding noise when decelerating (not terrible but noticeable) **maybe the previous owner was rough on it**
6) Diff locks seize (or just dont work), due to lack of maintenance, mine work, but I need to exercise them once in a while to check, and I still have not done that** make sure they work before you buy
7) Transfer case motor (switches High-Low) may need to be replaced due to trouble sensing the correct mode (my mechanic cleaned the connectors and reconnected during a flush, and all is well again) ** there is a whole thread on it.

Regarding the 5 speed vs the 7 speed, the 5 speed is clearly more solid in terms of handling torque, which is why when the 7 speed was introduced, it was on all but the AMG models. Eventually the 7 speed was beefed up to support the AMG models. So maybe 2009/2010 7 speed is better, but maybe someone else can comment on that.

The price differential year over year can be significant, easily $10K per year from 2002-2005, so do the math and be sure to find an inde you can trust...as you will need it to save you from the stealer prices. Oh yeah, this forum will help a lot to save you from frustration and time wasted.

Hope this helps.
