G550 tire questions

Hello everyone, I feel a little embarrassed keep coming back seeking answers. Thank you for any kind inputs and help.

I am thinking of changing the original summer times to a set of all season or on/off road tires as I live in New Jersey, the winter here is cold and a lot of snow during the past two years. There are three sets I am debating:

1) BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2
2) Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac
3) Michelin Latitude Tour HP

Which one would you suggest? Any thought would be appreciated.

I have another question. When I select the car maker and model/year on tirerack.com, the first two sets of tires won't show up on the search list. However if I search the tirerack.com by 265/60r18 they are on the list. I know little about tires so wondering if the first two sets of tires won't fit on the G550? even though all three sets are the same size.

Please shed some light on it. I am really confused. Thank you.

You can normally see user's reviews on Tire Rack by vehicle. You can also call them and ask them to recommend the best tire for your truck. I did that after searching for days for tires for a RX350. I'm from the FJ Cruiser world and a lot of people used "BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2" or Nitto Terra Grapplers. You might also want to go up a to get a taller and slightly wider tire.

Good Luck

Keith

In MA, I bought Michelin Latitute Tour for 2015 G550 as soon as I bought the G. OEM Kumho tires pretty bad traction for winter.
It's decent tires and my tire shops recommended it compare to HP that has higher speed rate. I don't drive fast by G, could save a bit by non-HP.

Other tires should fit as long as size is same.
If you really drive around in winter, buy winter tire like Michelin X-ICE2 rather all season. Traction is much better for the purpose. If you don't drive much on snow/icy road, all season SUV tires you listed all fine. Michelin is my preference for both sedan and SUV.

Don't get caught by pot hole!

Keith & Ybaba,

Thank you so much for your input. I just came back from a business trip last weekend. I followed your recommendation, called tirerack.com and a sales person kindly recommended the Duratrac to me. My dealer won't recommend the Duratrac but it is just because of the speed rating. I won't drive fast either so I decided to purchase the Duratrac for the G550.

Hopefully the Duratrac will do fine in the winter time. Thank you for your time and input again. I appreciate it.

Take a look at the new Goodyear Adventure Professional, in either 6,8 or 10 ply. I've owned KO's, Duratracs and Nitto EXO. This is the best tire out of all them if you do 80-90% on the freeway, and is snowflake rated.

I checked Goodyear website but couldn't find any Adventure Professional. Do you mind sharing the link with me? Thanks.

Here you go: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....re+with+Kevlar

Make sure to click on the "specs" tab, and scroll down. Only the "pro-grade" tires have the severe weather (triple mountain snowflake) rating, as the rubber is thicker. Hope that helps.

Thank you for the help. I checked but didn't find 265/60r18 pro grade. I guess yours might be G63 so the tire size is different from G550.

I am thinking of getting a G63 2017 model after the facelift. It should be wider and more comfortable. I hope the facelift won't ruin the legendary of the G wagon.

I have a 2015 G550. I got the 275-65-18 in 6 ply, pro grade. No need for 10 ply (e rating) unless you are towing. Make sure to get pro-grade or you will lose the snowflake rating. The ride is much less squirrelly now. Not sure if it's the width of the tire or the sidewall.

Thank you for sharing your tire info with me. I know little about tire configuration so please forgive me if my questions are stupid. Isn't the tire size supposed to be 265/65r18, not 275/65r18? Will changing tire size bring possible hazardous issues? Do I need new rims for the larger size of tires? Or they can just fit the original rims?

Sorry for so many questions. Thank you for the help.

No need to change the rims. It is only a slight (30.5 stock vs 32.1 inch) increase in size over stock. Some people go 33, 34 or even 35 inch tires. I wanted a slightly larger tire that increased traction and stability. Ignore the speed rating... No one sane drives their G550 over 115 MPH lol.

Thanks a lot. You know what, yesterday late afternoon I placed the order for 4 tires with tirerack.com, and in this noon around 12:30 pm they showed up on my front door!!! I mean, wow! that is a super super fast shipping.

I live in New Jersey, and they must have a warehouse in my neighborhood. I have never seen that fast shipping.

Which means it also kills my plan to change them to larger size tires. The tires look huge and I guess it is not easy to ship them back.
