When was front legroom reduced in the G-Class?

I just had an interesting experience in Europe. I was at an AMG event and had the opportunity to drive both the G63 and the G65.

Though the vehicles are impressive (the G65 is simply insane), I was dismayed to find that my knees nearly touched the dashboard. Since I used to own a G500, some 12 years back, this was a shocker -- the G-Wagen always had more front legroom than any other vehicle available in America.

I was told that Merc restricted the rearward travel of the front seat rails because this would place the driver too far back from the side airbags. If this is the case, can someone tell me exactly when this change was made?

I'm 6'4" and have owned a 1984 280GE (W460) and currently own a 2000 G500 (W463). My knees were/are very close to touching the dash in both vehicles. Leg room has never been a big feature in the G, in my experience; and there are a lot of vehicles with more leg room than the G.

My Audi Q7 has significantly more leg room than either of the G's. The same was true for both of my ML's, but not as much as the Q7.
