Everything seems to be so true with what everyone mentions regarding these vehicles. Little Gremlins start popping up everywhere. Most recently today, my drivers side front door will not open from the inside. The button mechanism opens and closes just fine and the door opens from the outside, however the inner door handle seems to not engage and the tension seems slightly, but not fully slack (when comparing the tension to the front right door). I started noticing this a week ago and I would have to press the electric unlock button on the center console and the door handle would allow for the door to open, but today no go. Has anyone had this issue and found a solution to it? I am assuming the cable is not fully engaging with the opening latch/bolt, but I don't know. I will be removing the door panel soon to snoop around.
ao, I removed the door handle and found that an plastic portion of the handle had started to give way, decreasing the tension that the cable placed. I figured that using JB Kwik in the area and allowing it to set while a clamp repositioned the broken portion allowing the epoxy hardened should do the trick. Turns out it did.
Note the distorted plastic after thousands of door pulls
Epoxy placed. I did not take a pic of it hardened, but it was rock hard with no more give.
You can just remove the door handle by using a pry tool and prying from the front. There is a panel clip there, but it may take some force to get out. After popping it out of the door panel, there should be just enough slack in the cable to pull the door handle mechanism out of the panel completely to undo the cable/see what's wrong with your unit.
Unfortunately, a common problem with the G - this part should have been metal or at least have metal reinforcement. Nice repair! I hope the epoxy stays bonded over time and temperature.

I popped the handle off and all seems good there...it seems like there is too much slack in the cable coming from the non-handle side...?
Guessing now I need to take off the door panel....
Knowing the layout from when you removed it, is it possible that the other side of the cable (I am assuming the “latch side”) has wearing out?
I have the exact same symptoms you had. Even to the point that I am always manually unlocking the door to prevent undue stress on the setup.
