Previously, the G-class was imported by a small dealer who only brought in a few vehicles a year. They did not have economies of scale and were the only game in town, so were free to set the price they felt they could get for it.
Now, Mercedes-Benz is bringing the vehicle to the US directly through its dealer network, and the $73k price is more in line with the price for this vehicle in Europe and the Middle East. Last year the price was more than double the cost of a new one in German.
