G Wagon has a broken door lock actuator? Here's a $10 fix.

Instructions for a 2003 G500

I'm not sure if the parts are the same for the 2009 and newer.

Go to eBay and search DLSM2. It's for a universal 2-wire power door lock. Buy it (or 5 like I did since I know I'm keeping the car a while and I hear that they all fail sooner or later). Google a pic of the genuine OEM Mercedes Benz part. It should look identical to the eBay version minus the harness at the end of the wire.

1. Take out the screws holding the chrome door latch and the main grab handle (3 total). Driver and passenger doors also have 2 screws on the bottom map pocket, rear does not.

2. Carefully pop off the panel from the door. I bought a door panel plier/prying tool from Harbor Freight which makes it easy.

3. Disconnect wires to various electronics (or rest the door panel on the running board while you work like I did.

4. peel back the plastic and locate the power door lock module and remove the 2 screws holding it in place. Then remove the lock from the hook.

5. cut the wire about an inch from the broken actuator and strip the ends of the wire. (Don't worry. You're not cutting any of the factory wiring, only the wire from the broken actuator. Further up the wire is the factory harness/clip.)

6. do the same to the new lock actuator leaving enough wire to work comfortably (about 1 1/2 inches). Match the positions of the wires, not the color since each manufacturer may use different colored wires.

7. Do a test run with the wires twisted together making sure they do not touch. If it works, untwist the wires and insert about 2 inches of waterproof heat shrink tubing on each of the wires. This can also be found cheap at Harbor Freight. Bring your coupons and get your free gift.

8. re-twist the wires and solder in place with rosin core solder made for electronics.

9. slide the heat shrink tubing over the soldered wires.

10. Heat tubing with a heat gun or blow dryer making sure to point away from the door plastic. (don't melt it like I did)

11. Test the lock. If all is in order, reverse the steps to replace everything.

The door lock on your G Wagon is now fixed!

I was also worried that it wouldn't work. I bought both motors with a gift card I had laying around. I thought to myself that if it didn't work, I wouldn't be out any cash. But low and behold, it worked. It's been a couple days and the actuators are going strong.

Just bough

Thanks for sharing. Just bought this modules will get it soon and try to install it myself.

I know that theres a module issue cuz sometimes the door will lock and unlock normally sometimes it just wont work.

But also I have my passenger side door chrome handle loose and will not open the door from inside, have to roll down the window and open from outside. But hopefully This should have an easy fix like when Take out the door panel should be something to figure out right ?

Thanks,

I just followed your instruction. Works great! The cheapest DLSM2 from Ebay is now $11.99, plus tax in NJ is $12.79. Thank you for your expertise m3crazyness.

Anyone have issues with the long term dependability of these actuators off ebay?
The ebay actuators don't seem to last too long. I've swapped out these actuators couple times on 2 of my doors.

Cheap actuators lasted approx 6 weeks

I was very excited to see a cheap alternative. I purchased a few cheap actuators from eBay using the supplied part number.

Both failed on the front passenger door within six weeks of installation.

I did notice both made a bit of a shrill noise when locking, which isn’t present with the other actuators. I figured we’d wait and see.

First time failed after six weeks. Installed the second one, also recently failed in about the same amount of time.

If I factor time spent plus the cost to do it right with a quality part, I’m way in the hole for trying to take a cheaper route instead of fixing properly the first time.

I appreciate sharing the hack, but this one didn’t work out all for me.

Any recommendations as to where to purchase an alternative outside of the dealership?
