G500 Steering Damper (part numbers needed please)

i understand the OEM piece goes quickly, i have replaced mine (benz specialist local ordered)

read several articles here explaining a maybach heavier duty part that could be used, could not find part number to save life... would love if someone has that and first hand experience if it's better/worth it.

i have 2001 Europa G500, i believe same shock as the 02+ USA models?

thank you.

I've had my G for about ten years now, and after replacing my steering shock twice with the factory one, I switched to the Bilstein steering shock and have never looked back!! noticeably better dampening. Bilstein Part #: 24-022149

I Just went back and searched my own amazon purchase log and found the one I bought in 2015... It's the one spec'd as an upgrade for the Land Rover defender & discovery...
Bilstein part number of 24-105804.

Amazon Amazon

It was recommended to me by another local G enthusiast and has worked great. I do remember that the side closest to the front left wheel, the bolt hole on the bracket had to be drilled out slightly larger to use a larger diameter bolt & locknut so the shock doesn't rattle. But I did it myself with a hand held drill without even having to jack up the truck. If you'd like, PM me your email address and Ill take some pics under my truck and email them to you.

Anyone who installed the Bilstein one comment on improvement over the stock one?

Thinking of a 2016 G63 and along with shocks and springs Im researching steering upgrades based on reports on here online reviews. Will be a RHD UK vehicle

Thanks

Fox makes a steering stabilizer that works like a two way double. I would use that one.

Those that changed their steering damper, how did the steering improve? I have a 2017 G63 with (15K miles) and the steering seems a little “loose” on the highway. Keep in mind I have been “playing” around with the suspension. I installed a lift via Thor springs and installed the Fox Shocks 2.0. I started having caster issues so I changed the springs back to OEM, but left the Fox shocks on. Now my steering doesn’t seem as tight as it was before I started messing with the ride.
Is it possible that I need a new steering stabilizer?

Did you try the aftermarket radius arms to address the caster issue?

Do you have the part number for the FOX damper MikeHoncho, does the two way damper make that much difference?

I live in the UK and it looks like the Bilstein stuff is more readily available here, B6 sport suspension shocks and steering damper

Thanks

Doesnt one end of the damper fix to the front diff making it a fixed point and the other end is attached to the steering linkage? Just trying to figure out how a 2 way would work and new to the G set up so may be misunderstanding it?

Thanks

I tried to install FOX damper few months ago and it broke the stabilizer bracket. So I swap it with oem instantly.
Unfortunately I couldn't try it at the road to see how it does perform.

Maybe the Bilstein B6 damper is enough to fit like OEM and give us increased feel in the steering?

This is a link to the clamps. The shock they are selling is not a dual action like I like to use. I go off road, and it looks like you have lowered yours so I don't think you need what I do. The stabilizer is designed to absorb shock to the steering wheel from things like bumps and potholes. It will not tighten up your steering. https://www.gwagenparts.com/product/...cedes-g-class/

Will the Bilstein B6 damper tighten it, standard suspension as it stands.

Thanks

Not if I understand what you are saying. The dampner/stabilizer only works when you have a "shock" to the steering system through the road. What problems are you experiencing? Wandering? Sloppiness in the wheel?

Havent got the 2016 G63 yet, hopefully will be ready for me this Thursday. Was reacting to many reviews that talk about a lack of feedback in the steering where you can actually move the wheel at highway speeds and the car continues straight, so just wondering if fitting the Bilstein B6 spec damper might tighten it up enough to provide a bit more response to steering wheel input?

Appreciate more steering effort/rotation is required with G Wagon was just looking to improve the connection between steering wheel and road wheels

Thanks

Thanks

Its just the nature of the solid axle beast. If you think the G drives poorly, take a Wrangler for a spin.

Havent driven one yet hahahahaha was just starting to think about things Id do once I collect her later this week.

The steering damper is a cheap upgrade so I thought why not if it improves steering feel and removes some of the sloshyness reported by online reviewers

Thanks

Check the link on post 15. They are not MB specific, so you can probably find them cheaper elsewhere.

Thank you guys for the info on the steering damper. Just bought a 02' G500 and the damper is dead and left me searching for a good upgrade.
