Seriously, though, an extremely fast ignition kill whilst manual paddle shifting in a G63 is a helluva lot different than a full ignition cut off, but who knows.

I guess they’ll just put the 550 software into the 63. Most 63 buyers will never know the difference.

Your homework assignment, for today, is to read the article, per the posted link. I believe the problem involving CPC reset whilst driving is present in a plethora of Mercs, not just the g550.

May I suggest that you actually read the article yourself. There are a total of 119 cars in this extremely minor recall. I also did my homework and verified that my G550 is not in the recall. If you didn’t understand my previous post with the LOL at the end, please send me a PM and I will explain.

It is more likely the MB tried to convince USDOT that the G63’s bull bar isn’t part of the bumper and the USG said it’s part of the bumper and needs to meet bumper requirements. The German government looked the other way when MB said the 19’s weren’t a redesign, but that doesn’t mean other governments have accept whatever manufacturers say.

You should check my TA’s office hours, as he grades all my students’ homework assignments. 😁

Maybe the delay in the G63’s launch in the US is because MBUSA is pleading their case to allow the G63’s diminimus lower bull bars to be eliminated altogether, as a special exception reserved for truly exotic cars?

Well, we can hope, can’t we?!😁

Sure, just give me his contact info. I’m pretty sure I could give him a really good job offer, assuming he is attending a top tier school and had productive internships outside of the university setting. There’s no need for anyone to waste time being a TA.

MB currently has only one exotic model, the Project One, which also comes with an exotic price tag. Hopefully, you secured your spot on the list. The rest of the Mercedes models are simply mass produced vehicles which are competitively priced to be accessible to a very large portion of the population. There’s no amount of hope that will make an AMG anything-63 an exotic. Mercedes will always make as many as they can sell.

I’m not sure why you feel it is necessary to keep puting the G550 down. Putting a smilie after each put down just makes it look passive aggressive.

I understand you cancelled your G550 order and have chosen an indefinite delay in waiting to buy a G63. That’s your choice, but this is an online community where people like me are here to learn from and assist other G Class owners who have real questions. Some of your questions have been answered by me taking the time to go into my garage to investigate and in many cases uploading photographs to aid in your understanding. If you haven’t noticed by now, those of us who actually own the G550 are quite happy with our purchases. We read the same literature as you, but we made a different purchase decision. Certainly, you don’t think the 18% premium for the G63 isn’t anything more than chump change. I would be more than happy to pay an 18% premium to own a G350D here in the States. For my intended usage, none of the AMG modifications are improvements, thus the G63 would have 18% less functionality. If one intends to drive an SUV at 149mph on the road or a racetrack, then the G63 is an excellent choice. If one intends to drive an SUV over the roughest terrain at 1.49 mph, then the G550 is an excellent choice. If one doesn’t intend to use the G Class in either situation, then maybe the G isn’t the best choice of vehicle.

P.S. MBWorld has an AMG G Class forum. Maybe there are more likeminded people there for you.

When I spec'ed out my g550, it was very loaded, and with 10.2% sales tax plus EFW and A/B, the total price was $174,937. My G63 that I have on order is also very loaded, and its grand total with sales tax plus EFW and A/B is $197,142. The delta price is 12.7%. To my way of thinking, this difference is not that much more than sales tax burden of 10.2%, so the overall price delta, considered in relative terms, is not that great.

As to the differences in comparing these two vehicles, again to my mind, it is great. When I watched the many test reviews of test drivers actually driving these vehicles in the real world, it was universally true that when the guy really put his foot into the G63, his head snapped back rather smartly, and a huge smile instantly got planted all across his face, looking very genuine and not at all fake or staged, not unlike what you see in the many Tesla acceleration test drive videos, particularly when the Tesla is equipped with the Ludicrous option. The G63 test driver typically exclaims, "Wow, I can't even believe the acceleration of this vehicle, especially given its weight!!" I didn't see any of this sort of reaction in the g550 test drivers that I watched. Same thing with the G63 in Sport+ mode with its AMG side pipes opened up. I was just watching a video today where the test driver noted how much more of a growl the G63 emits than the g550, even when the latter is equipped with the AMG sport exhaust. Then, there is the bigger brakes (not to mention I love the AMG red, looks way cool!), with all 4 rotors being drilled, the tranny on the AMG provides much faster up and down shifting, the steering on the AMG is very progressive in Sport+ mode on the street, I love the factory 22" wheels on the G63 vs/ the 20 inch rims on the g550 (MB does not allow an option for 22 inch rims on the g550), and the deltas just keep going on and on.

So, for me, I look at paying not much more than what I will pay in sales tax to upgrade to the AMG G63, and I really love all of the extra performance features I get with the 63, only some of which I have named here.

I have mentioned before my G63 vehicle will be strictly for road-only use, as off-roading has only reservation demand value for me, since I will never actually go off-roading with this particular car in the real world. Even at that, this car will handle just short jaunts for the most part, such as nice trips on Saturday mornings to my local Starbucks, a scant 1 mile from my house. I have another vehicle I use for long trips, and the like. For off-roading use, my plan is to get the 2019 Wrangler Rubicon, not unlike the 2013 Rubicon I previously owned. The 4-door Wrangler Rubicon, when fully optioned out, costs just over $50,000, or just about one-fourth the cost of my G63. I could literally buy almost 4 qty of Jeep Rubicons for the price of just one qty 63. Moreover, I can't even imagine scraping the heck out of a $150k g550, let alone a $200k G63, whilst crawling around over gigantic boulders in the boonies. But, if I scrape up, or perhaps damage it even worse than this, my Jeep going to or from my mountain top repeater, it's not by any means the end of the world. Accidentally inflicting the same damage to a G would be a whole lot bigger deal, in my book. To my way of thinking, such damage would simply not be "worth it." And, lets face it, I don't care how good of a driver anyone thinks they may be, when a guy goes seriously off-roading, lots of bad **** can, and will, happen.

So, as you can tell, you and I just don't see eye-to-eye on the G63 vs. g550. I am not saying the 550 is a "bad" car, just that the 63 makes way more sense, for my particular needs. Before being so critical about me, you might do well to look into the mirror, and see how you have repeatedly put down the G63, in many ways, such as your latest post wherein you point out how for you the G63 has 18% less functionality, implying that going 149mph is essentially a waste, unless you are on a race track (I guess you would never buy a Corvette, or a Dodge Demon, etc., using your same reasoning). So, at least let's agree you dislike the value proposition of the G63 at least as much, if not more, than I do the value proposition of the g550, and you have repeatedly expressed this view. OTOH, I have also repeatedly said, "To each, his own," and I have also many times noted "IMHO, JM2C, and YMMV." I may have missed it, but I don't recall off-hand you ever saying something similar to this.

Anyways, it looks like you and I will not agree on this subject anymore than Democrats and Republicans will ever again agree on anything!

BTW, let's face it, putting your little greenie head thingy icon at the end of your posts is also of the same ilk as my smiley thingy, IMHO.

Cheers!

So it’s all good? Dems vs. Reps is your claim. In reviewing your last post, you consistently used G63 and g550. Heck, you even capitalized all of the other vehicles models. Do you realize that this type of childishness makes any positive statement that you attempted to make sound insincere?

I’ve not been trying to put the G63 down, but I have been trying to clue you in that there’s no need to continuously bash the G550. I tried to explain the positive aspects of the G550. I tried to correct your blatant misstatements about the G550. I tried to explain engineering choices that are omitted in the advertising lingo and finally, I have shifted to try to show you that other people have different perspectives and that they may have valid reasons for choosing something other than the G63. None of this appears to be working with you. So let me try this again, the G63 is a great car and a great choice, but it is not everyone’s choice. The G550 is also a great car and also a great choice, but it is not everyone’s choice. One model does net exist to the detriment of the other. MB made both of these models available since their market research showed there was sufficient appeal for both models to be sold side-by-side. Do you understand these statements?

I won’t include the LOL (the little green thingy) since I’m not making a joke in this post nor am I laughing at your statements, but I will include roll eyes to indicate that I’m annoyed with one of your posts, yet again.

P.S. I have legally driven 150 mph on numerous occasions, including many hours of 140+ cruising on the Autobahn. You’ll be surprised to know that a six cylinder diesel with only 265hp is more than sufficient for those types of speeds.

I most definitely would not want to drive 149MPH in a G under any conditions; at least not a pre-2019 G. I'm not convinced I would want to drive a 2019 G that fast either. While I really do enjoy the extra growl and amazing acceleration of my current G63; my previous G550's (2016 and 2014) weren't exactly dogs when it came to performance. I played around with options in the most recent DOG to come up with configurations that were as close as possible for a G550 and G63 and the price delta was around $16K more for the G63. IMHO, the differences are pretty much all about engine performance this time around. In 2018 and earlier years, getting a G63 was the only way to get some of the nice interior upgrades, such as the diamond stitched seats. With the 2019 model, you can now get all the nice interior upgrades on a G550, which makes switching back to a G550 a much more attractive option for me. It seems like the AMG Line option also strikes a pretty nice balance between the G550 and G63.

Living in New England, 22 inch wheels are something I definitely do NOT want as I need tires that are good in the snow and I don't have space for 2 sets of wheels and tires, nor do I really want to spend the money on a 2nd set of wheels.

But it's probably best at this point for a few to agree to disagree as I think both sides might be overreacting a bit.

A link had been posted a few days ago for the latest version of the DOG, but it looks like a bunch of posts disappeared from the thread. If nobody posts the link, I can try to find it for you or share my copy of the file.

And the answer is??????????????????

Get the G550, if you want the overpowered motor for this type of vehicle size, shape and weight, hold off on the G63 and wait for the G65, then you can really be mismatched (don't dare insert a smiley face here).

Y'all two crazy. G wagon is a Gwagon! We always give each other the nod on the road! That said, the price delta is quite small between the g63 and g550. Other models easily commands an easy 50k+ difference. I get the 63 just cause I"m a brand *****. The G550 is an exceptionally capable vehicle and supposedly, an even better off-roader. And as a bonus, it's available now. My dealer has confirmed G63 has been pushed back to Feb as well. Blah

Hey guys new to the forum, just received my black/black G550 from the dealer last month. Absolutely love the vehicle, far better than my 2016 G550. I have another G550 (diamond white with red/black diamond stitch interior and carbon fiber bits)...

These are terrific cars. Wish I would've paid more attention at delivery though cause the electronics are pretty complicated .

As to G63, I would much prefer to drive this at those speeds...

Brand new here but my 550 is coming in at $144K and I thought that was loaded. I live in Vail Colorado and from everyone I've talked to (not many as I only know 3 actual owners here in town) they all said get the 550 for living in the mountains. Bottom line, to each their own. I'm just excited we're finally getting one. We have a LWB Range Rover that's great but see this as more of our fun vehicle. Real reason we're getting the 550 is that after I bought the 2019 Range Rover, the wife took it so now I'm getting the 550 and then either way I'll get to drive something cool!

You will be very happy Snipe. I think the G in either model is 100% cool for Colorado living. You will have no problems getting to the mountains to ski!
