Paint Protection for Edition 1

Just got my edition 1. This is my first matte-painted car so I am somewhat intimidated by the possible scratches and sun marks. Does anyone know how to take care of the Magno paint? Maybe some sort of paint guard that won’t deprive the matte look?

Definitely recommend a clear bra in matte finish for the front end. Your installed won't be thrilled working with the front brush guard, but hopefully he can work around that or is willing to dismount it for the instal. You may also opt to do the windshield trim, backs of the rear view mirrors, and luggage loading area. I also recommend the edges of the doors where you'll be touching them often when closing and opening (believe it or not the natural oils from a person's hands can stain the paint and leave a soiled finish).

There are also ceramic coatings that can be applied to satin/matte finishes to preserve their finish and protect against the "polishing" effect that occurs with improper washing techniques. These finishes also protect against acid rain, bird dropping and hard water spots.

Good luck!

Xpel Stealth/Suntek Matte for front end or whole car. Its a paint protection film.
Ceramic coating on top of the film for beading of water, ease of cleaning car and protect the life of your paint even longer.

Oils from fingers and hands will stain the matte paint? Man I think I'll stick with Polar White.

No need to fear magno paint. Obviously on a new car you should protect it with PPF if you like. The paint is extremely durable and resistant to swirls marks. Rock chips touch up very well with OEM touch up paint. Larger paint damage would be harder to fix but repaints aren't difficult as the rumors makes it seem. Any competent shop should be able to repair it. The key is getting the satin clear coat right.

Never heard of stains from skin oil or fingerprints. Use Dr. Beasley matte spray as quick detailer after wash and you're good to go.

My 2019 G63 Edition 1 is my second G in Designo Magno Night. Had a 2011 G55 which I drove over 70,000 miles in 4 years. Washed it in regular brush car washes (With request to have wax turned off). Paint Looked like new when I turned it in in 2015 and unlike my shiny clear coat cars where I could see the car wash swirls on a sunny day, the matte car never developed any swirls so I think the satin clear coat they use is a harder material. Yes it is a bit harder to match a paint job if you scrape it. (body shop had to repaint a door 3 times to get it right but they did get it right eventually). Already washed my new 2019 G63 Edition 1 a few times in the regular car wash (without wax) and I expect the paint to be even more durable than in 2011. Mercedes already made it very durable the way it is so just simply enjoy it!

That's really good to know as my most recent 2019 G550 order is for the matte black. Thanks for the very informative post haa

Would agree with this. If you're looking for protection, go with a PPF, specifically for the front end.

A ceramic coating is a good addition for the reasons outlined, and can be easily applied yourself. Most consumer grade stuff will however add a slight gloss to the matte paintwork. It's not going to make it ultra shiny all of a sudden, but there will be a difference. There are some specific coatings designed for matte paint, so if that's a concern, definitely explore the matte options.

* Cquartz has a solid DIY kit specifically for matte, vinyl etc.
