Apologies if there is a thread on this already, but I'm curious to know if there is anything different/special about the designo manufaktur paints. I love the Olive Metallic but it's an additional $6500 so curious if it comes with extra clear coats or is just the same paint and one is paying for the limited color? Dealer wasn't able to shed any light.

PS - One good thing about these long delays for our G's is that it gives you time to rethink all your choices haha.

 

My impression is that some Designo colors are more special than your standard Mercedes paints. For example, they might have more depth or sparkle. But it's also an opportunity for Mercedes (along with Porsche, BMW) to charge a ridiculous amount for standard paints offered in the past. Also, with the exception of Alubeam (liquid silver), there isn't anything really special about their application, and they don't come with extra clear, for example.

 

It is unfortunate that Mercedes dealer personnel come up short in product expertise - I would expect MB Manhattan (as MB owned) "should" be a bit stronger in this.

designo Manufaktur was a added/special "design and workshop group" added by MB at Magna Steyr in Graz to design and implement extended "individualization" i.e. in the "Italian luxury" sense to the the G-Wagon.

Yes - in color - composition - visual impact each Manufaktur exterior represents a fresh/individual specific design theme - and all Manufaktur exteriors are craftsmen applied (rather than robot) again in the "Italian luxury" sense.

A Mercedes Certified Collision Center - preferably that has both Magno and Manufakter training - can give you the breakdown of the color/coats/finishing.

"Individualization" is not what it sounds like - it is not "make my G-Wagen Hot Pink #532X" - G-Wagen "individualization" is more in the theme of the Italians or Land Rover (upper end) meaning distinctive exterior or interior combinations that are executed in workshop/small-line versus on main production line..

G manufaktur – the G-Class in a tailor-made suit

The new individualisation range G manufaktur offers scope for yet more exclusivity. With a total of around a million combination options for series and G manufaktur models the wide choice of G-Class versions knows virtually no bounds – theoretically, vehicles could actually be produced for several decades in Graz without any two of them being identical. In this way customers can design their own personal G from one G. The individualisation processes can be embedded into production in such a way that customers do not have to wait a long time for their vehicle, even when ordering from the G manufaktur range.

For the seats alone there are 64 different combinations of seat upholstery layouts and seat designs. Then there is the processing of exclusive materials, for instance for leather-covered grab handles, wood/leather steering wheels or trim parts which are refined with piano lacquer or open-pore woods.

The variety of colours leaves virtually nothing to be desired, either. In the interior the customers also have a free choice from the wide colour palette for the nappa leather on the steering wheel, instrument panel and seats, and for the topstitching and seat belts. For the exterior, 34 paint colours offer a choice for every taste – and the spare wheel ring is now also available in the vehicle colour. Anyone choosing the Night Package can in future also have their G-Class with Black Accents, featuring the roof, bumpers, wheel arches and spare wheel ring in obsidian black and black Mercedes star. Black disc wheels are also available with immediate effect. As a special extra, vehicles with an individualised leather package in the interior can be identified by the G manufaktur badge on the grab handle in front of the front seat.
