Mercedes G Spare Tire Cover Lock Kit

I have a 2019 G63. I ordered part number 463-890-03-89, it went right on but wouldn't lock. Asked my service adviser and found out it only fits 1990 to 2009 models. So I purchased a set of locking lug nuts figuring I would put one on the spare and the other three on the vehicle. When I removed the cover I realized the spare is mounted backwards so the locking lug nut wouldn't work. (my first G so still learning these things). My thought is that since it only takes a screw driver to remove the cover both the cover and spare tire could easily be stolen at a cost approaching 5K.

So I guess all G wagons built the last 10 years don't have any kind of lock on the spare tire cover.

I for one certainly wish someone built one and don't understand why Mercedes hasn't offered one the last 10 years. My only guess is they don't get stolen very often.

Don't think they are stolen too often - but they are. But this is cool if looking for alternatives:

The spare tire cover is identical to the previous model so not sure why it would not lock. recheck your installation, you may have too much or too little tension on the screw mechanism that holds the cover in place

Although the lock will easily install with the C clip there is absolutely no way for the lock to function. The cover may be the same but the closing clasp must be different and obviously changed in 2010.

I just call my MB parts manager, still nothing available. He said he would call me if and when they become available to order.

Does the 2013-2018 already have an optional lock?

If all you're looking for is a locking lug nut to fit the spare's mounting stud bolts, Dorman sells a set that will fit - size is M14-1.5 - and can be found at most auto stores. I had to add collars made from 1" i.d. tubing about 1" long. Since these lug nuts are sold in a package of 4, I installed 3. Not theft-proof but somewhat theft-deterent. The after-market spare cover ring I bought from Boomerang has a locking clasp. An earlier post of mine has more info. I can post a photo of the lug nut and collar if anyone is interested.

The Dorman p/n is 712-680. The photos below show the wheel lock lug nut and the collar I made to cover the back half of the nut. These lug nuts are intended for applications where the lug nut is recessed partially into the wheel and where the back half can't be reached with vise-grips. The collar I made is 1" outside diameter ( ~59/64" inside diameter) and just under an inch long (~31/32") so it spins freely like the front half that requires the key adapter. The collar is made from aluminum tubing that can be found in most hardware stores.

Thanks for posting. An extra layer of protection is always good. But I think the OP meant the lock kit for the spare tire cover latch

My co-worker has 2015 G550 which came with the lock, I don't think it was an option.
