I just bought a cheap endoscope on Amazon ($20) for an unrelated project. It attaches to your phone and offers pretty decent image quality. I might use it to inspect a few hard to reach areas like the underside of the doorsills and these seams. Maybe I can figure out how to better treat them.

Just letting you know i have the same issue on 2011 G 350 in the same places.
It must be an inherent problem but shouldn't be as I thought i was buying a quality brand.
I also had the same with a 1998 C43 AMG and the said it was stone chips but i kept hassling MB and they final came to the table and resprayed and fixed it.
I'm a EX panelbeater and knew it was not stone chips but what we call a worm. It's in the metal from the start.
Not must help for you I'm sorry but your not allow.
Cheers
Mike.

@Texas E63 just found something resembling corrosion on my G along the seam…though it looks more like…delamination…than corrosion.
ill try and see if I can view it from behind with my endoscope…not sure if its a surface issue or not. I think at this point I’m just going to apply a small dab of penetrating oil, followed by a dab of red n’ tacky, after every wash. It’s barely noticeable but I don’t feel like having it sanded/painted. I might even create some kind of “stencil” with which to cover the surrounding area so I can work without getting oil elsewhere.

I did something very similar on my 20yr old Porsche Cayenne recently. Turned out fine. I should have done a year ago when I first spotted it. Rust is not like wine or cheese, it doesn't get better with age.

Duplicator sells that in a spray can - just make sure you tape off at least five feet in every direction and use fans to draw/push air away from the car because even light coats up close will spread through the air and land on the vehicle.

The small touch bottles (base plus clear) are likely perfect for seams.

Hello,
I'm new to the forum and this is my first post...
I've always wanted a G-Wagon, but reading this thread has me looking closer at Range Rovers. Is there a range of years that the G series are less affected by the rust issues?
Have they fixed the issue, and if so, what year did they do it?
Thanks in advance for your response.
Dan

While rust is obviously an issue with older G Wagons (pre-2019) it’s not that common or there would be a lot more complaints.

I owned a 2006 L322. It was some work, but all in the drive was good and having bought it used and depreciated, I can't complain too much.

I have a 2019 G Wagon. It's been outdoors 24x7 for 4.5 years, through Canadian winters. No rust at all. They made significant changes to the vehicle in this regard. For example, there is a sacrificial zinc anode on the doors!

Maybe I need to adjust my budget a bit.

Almost anything in the rust belt rusts inevitably. I had an 02' C320 and the bottoms of the doors were rusting or had rusted through, since apparently MB didn't galvanize the metal at that point... no idea on the validity of that but that's all I've read. You might be get a better ride with a RR, but something on air and IFS will never be as offroad capable as a solid axle rig. Mall crawlers don't count. And on that note, the G550 and 7spd gear box up to 15 or 16' is the best combo for offroad, last of the V8 before switching to the TTv6, and a lot less complex to have to worry about things breaking while far from home. I'll take my chances on what's proven rather than worry about some spots here and there, worse case buy extended warranty or a rig from the south/SW US and put miles on it!

From looking at several G wagons, it appears to me that the paint is failing/small flaking and cracking along seams first (likely from flexing or incapability with the weld along the seams), from there corrosion starts. Diligent touch up/clear coat along the seams as soon as small cracks form should prevent further issues. Go around your seams with a bright light and a magnifying glass.
