Seriously though, this is probably the best answer I've heard pertaining to the windshield issue. So is it an install issue? Are these windshield being installed incorrectly (outside the tolerance levels)?
For those interested, there's a fairly comprehensive primer on ADAS at https://www.aaa.com/autorepair/artic...s-repair-costs

No, that's not it at all. The correct answer is the rubber gasket that the old G Wagen used as well. It allowed the windshield the flex and absorb the rock hits better.
The windshields on the current G Wagen are installed by robot. I have yet to hear of a stress fracture on a G Wagen windshield.
It's all rock damage.

A rubber gasket around the windshield's perimeter does nothing to absorb direct impact of a rock.

It does if that's what's holding the windshield to the car. It allows a little flex in the glass. Modern windshields are epoxied directly to the chassis, no flex at all.

I'm curious about the windshield flex theory. I'd like to see the flex from the windshield when a rock hit it (and the flex contributes to non-breakage). I wonder if the new windshield is just thinner glass and/or the glass is more fragile.
