2020 Mercedes G63 Impressions

2020 Mercedes g63 Owner Impressions:

I have a 2015 Mercedes 63 and recently I have added a 2020 G63....My Impressions:

2020 g63: The good: It looks good in person---the small details and evolution of the design for this generation are noticeable and IMO, a positive step. Much like I appreciate all generations of the 911(except 99-2005)---the exterior design changes work well. It is a much better vehicle for daily use....Wet Weather handling is phenomenal...haven't been to snow yet so...who knows...No turbo lag that is noticeable...2015 had some lag but that was mostly addressed by the installation of a Pedal box unit...probably don't need one on the 2020. The door locks sound like a rifle being loaded...loud.

Negatives: Driving the 2020 is like driving an E Class (IMO) The motor and transmission are a very sanitized in their delivery of power...the shifts are not noticeable and the transmission has almost no abruptness in up-shift and downshift....My 2015 g63 was very analog, which I enjoy, the 2020 g63 is very sanitized---I do not hear or feel the motor or transmission working---
The torque delivery is not as good (IMO) down low...The 2020 doesn't feel special from 1-4,000 rpms.....from 4500 RPMS and up , it comes alive---but the sound seems manufactured and it is delivered without any drama or passion...when I accelerated in my 2015 g63 from 1-4,000 RPM's--it was a visceral , aural delight...the sense of power and sound was brutal and pushed you back in in the seat ....The 2015 g63 made noises that I enjoyed and I feel added to the driving experience

The Burmester Stereo doesn't have mid range or bass that I enjoy---The sub-woofer is weak and the cabin resonates with many unpleasant sounds from front door panels---my 2013 911 S had a door panel issue at first, which porsche was able to remedy...So I am hopeful Mercedes can/will address this...

The Drip Rails are gone on the 2020---most of my roof attachments from my 2015 will not work and I really liked the metal drip rails on my 2015---cheap plastic caps on the 2020 look and feel horrible.

Side Moldings on the 2020 look and feel cheap...the 2015 had much better quality moldings ...the 2020 has rough, unfinished plastic that looks like a cost saving measure....

The 2020 is great and I am not one of those people who says everything that is new is better or worse for that matter...I try to be objective.

Cheers---

This was a great comparison of the old and new. I have been looking for someone to post something like this. I have a 2020 onorder and I had a 17. Do you wish you still had your 15?

Compared my 2010 G55 to my 2019 G63 and share many of the same comments. I will say that the whole driving experience changed after the break in period. Sounds and torque were al much improved. Still several notches below the G66 in terms of visceral expereince but inproved after the first few weeks of ownig the car. So curious if you have a similar experience. I believe (no confirmation other than observation) the car is programed to be softer during break in. Or maybe I was just not pushing it as hard. But agree on the over use of plastics on exterior and the lack of a proper rain guard in favor of the trim and rack mount points on the roof. Sound system is not great and lots of interior noises (mainly hvac related for me).

Is it a better G, yes. Do i miss my G55, yes. I'd take the 2019+ all day long.

I agree that the power delivery does seem to improve as mileage increases—-your idea that the power is reduced during the break-in period may be accurate. I drove my 2015 today and really enjoyed it —the suspension is a bit harsh —but it doesn’t bother me—.
I am considering a renntech upgrade after 2500 miles. I miss the savagery of the 2015...the 2020 is a great rig for sure maybe just an exhaust and ecu upgrade would help me fall in love with it...

I just bought a 2018 because I wanted the true truck form of the G Wagen
To me the new one is an amazing, luxury SUV not the Military Truck made into a luxury truck that it was.
Ive driven both the new 550 and 63.
Without a doubt if I was forced to buy a new SUV now it would be the new G63 over a Rover without a doubt.

This is NOTHING more than my .02 cents and its honestly not even worth that much!

In a couple years I am sure I will be buying a new G63 for some of the comfort/tech features it has and are to come BUT if they kept the G as it was only updating tech/comfort features with time I would have been even happier.

I had a 06 Wrangler Rubicon UL when I first started dating my wife. It had BFG 33's and a Old Man Emu 2.5 in HD lift I sold several years ago due to it getting old, mileage and the mysterious Jeep Death Wobble it had since new (before and after lift).
I replaced it with an 06 LX470 a couple years back (it was my winter car mainly at that point). I am selling that now that I got the G and am a 1 vehicle guy again.

Anyway took my wife out first time in the G a few days ago. When we got to dinner I asked her what she thought about it, she kinda smiled and said while it isn't for her it is the perfect car for me. She said this is like your Jeep was but only faster, nicer and more comfortable. I got a GOOD laugh when she asked me "but is it supposed to be so loud?" LOL HECK YEAH! Wait till I get a new exhaust on it!! LOL. Hopefully she won't notice HaHa
