W463 G63 Owners - Thoughts on overall Reliability?

Hi, I'm looking to purchase a '16 G63 (30k miles) from a dealer and debating if I should opt for the extended warranty. This is my first G (coming from the RR and BMW camps). The G63 has the balance of the factory 4yr/50k mile warranty, which will expire next year. Looking to keep this one for many years and was wondering what the overall reliability of these trucks were. Any thoughts/opinions from present or past owners on whether I should get the CPO extended warranty would greatly be appreciated!

Happy New Year! Excited to join the G family soon!

Very reliable from everything I have read and experienced first hand. But do get the extended warranty. You dont want to be stuck if something bad happens on yours.

No more MB:(
Get the warranty. One hiccup and it can overshadow the cost of warranty. AMG's are not cheap to fix.

Get the warranty. While the basic mechanics on a G are fairly reliable, there are several common issues that can cost money to fix. In addition, the newer G's are an electronic time bomb waiting to go off and repair of these items is very expensive. One thing you should be aware of is that MB support for previous models has gotten extremely poor as of late so there are many parts on the previous W463 chassis that are NLA. I guess they are trying to drive folks into an endless loop of disposable 4 year vehicles. Sad indeed for a company like MB.

I am in the same boat as you just got a 2016 in 11/19 and did get 1 extra yr on cpo. Hope all works out for you. Verify your current tires and make sure you get a reliable winter tire if in snow/ice!!

Good Luck

Check for rust, particularly around the windshield and the side panels in front of the front doors. Also check the hinges near the trunk. I have a ‘16 in Solarbeam that basically was fully repainted after 2y.

A gaggle of MB's
The good news is that the G-Wagon LOVES to be driven - I have one client who drives 40K miles per year to follow her NBA son thru training and his season (hates flying) and other than normal maintenance she has had no issues - gets a new G63 every two years..

1. Extended Mercedes CPO Warranty is 100% refundable if you sell/trade your G before getting to that extension - and after you move into the Extended Warranty if sold/traded later you may qualify for refund based on unused "time" less any warranty repairs made under the extension.
If you are not talking Mercedes CPO - then frankly for a G wagon you would need to read the proposed 3rd party policy very/very carefully - I have seen 3rd party policies "sold" by dealers that literally covered nothing when needed - since claims to 3rd party provider were kicked back with G-Wagon classified as a "special purpose vehicle not covered" and policy was NOT refundable

2. Mercedes offers Glass Protection - a replacement front windshield for a G is dang expensive and have gone up a lot in the past 1 1/2yrs - check dealer replacement windshield cost installed - last time I checked I remember like $3200 if I remember correctly - coverage last time I checked covers a specific # of years - and check it "should" cover up cost for 2 replacements - cost for the protection last time I checked was about 1/2 or less of the cost of one replacement windshield installed - I don't know of any auto insurance policy that covers full amount of windshield/damage replacement for a G - if you are in a collision accident insurance will cover - but windshield road damage/replacement your auto policy will NOT cover replacement.

Keep the beat !
