Newbie 2016 G63 Potential Purchase - Questions
Hi Guys
Long time MB owner and member here but new to the G Class, have the opportunity to purchase a 2016 G63 here in the UK, done 35,000 miles, full MB dealer history etc. Past cars have been GL63, ML63, Range Rover SVR (my current daily), Range Rover Vogue Supercharged, Cayenne Turbo and so on. Not expecting that level of ride/driving ability but wanted to know if there are any upgrade options out there specifically for steering and body roll on these beasts? Did the 2016 have any chassis upgrades, I thought I heard somewhere that it did for the facelift around this time, is that correct?
Anything specific I should know about the 2016 or G Class in general please feel free to share advice?
Thanks
Carl

1) get an extended warranty without a doubt.
2) Steering nothing I am aware of what you can do, it's going to feel "loose." You'll get used to it.
3) Body roll and comfort - I would recommend getting upgraded suspension, I can only comment on the Brabus one, but Renntech looks like a good option too.

I recommend Brabus as it has a button to select ride control.
You have a lot of options here.

Wow thanks for the info, crazy prices!!
How harsh is the ride, the SVR can be pretty harsh on rough road surfaces, is it worse than that do you think? Its more the body roll and bounce Im concerned about, Im thinking the G is a body roll car rather than bounce if the ride is harsh, is that correct? Will lowering springs that reduce the shock travel help with body roll by lowering the centre of gravity?
Didnt realise how expensive "upgrade" stuff is for the G63.

You want a raw SUV, body-on-frame, something that holds value 100x better than any SVR - get the G63.
As a driver, the ride never feels harsh to me. If it's body roll you want to reduce, get the KW coil overs, the spring rate is more firm and you can lower the ride height which will do exactly what you're looking for. That will help a material amount.
The SVR sounds intoxicating stock - just about one of the nicest SUV exhaust sounds. But depreciates like a rock and reliability isn't the strong area for Landrovers.
G63 you can keep forever and will still look relevant.
Test drive both if you haven't and just buy the one you fall in love with. They are both depreciating assets, the smarter financial choice would be like a 4Runner or Landcruiser and drive it for 20 years.
My GL63 has active body control and it's surprising how little body roll there is on such a huge vehicle. It's called active curve and the newer models have an even more advanced system.

I drive the SVR now and previously owned a GL63, that was a great vehicle.
The SVR is great in many ways but doesnt feel special. To be honest the look of a G with larger wheels and some subtle upgrades looks amazing, that opinion was reaffirmed with the release of the facelift but over here theres still around £50,000 GBP between the 2016 and a new shape.
The coilover kit sounds like a good way to go, Im going to have to accept it doesnt do what the previous vehicles have been able to do, and one reason for the purchase is the financial element that you touched on, deprecated is around £10,000 over 3 years on the G, probably £35,000 on the SVR I have now
Thanks for the info and feedback

Ive no real idea what the chassis differences mean, ladder frame, independent suspension on the new model to improve suspension etc just know the old one is a design focussed on off road use

The best deals is the first year refresh of 2013 with high mileage. You can pick them up at a great price. Most G owners take care of them (at least first or 2nd owners) with an open check book. Kind of if you own a SVR, you're probably paying to get it maintained correctly.
I think the ultimate classic SUV is the G wagon with a Brabus Widestar body kit.
The easiest way to explain the chassis/suspension differences - G wagon 2018 and older = drives like a pick-up truck. 2019-2020 G wagon - feels and drives more like your SVR.
You coming from a GL63 and SVR - it's going to be different, but it "goes with the character" of the car. The G wagon still turns heads and will continue to do so for the next 20 years. The price of entry is very high unlike a GL or Range Rover where you can get base models for cheap. The base model of a G550 is still out of the price range of many. That adds to the exclusivity.
Get the G63, I'm sure it'll put a smile on your face every time you drive it and getting a bargain where the original owner took the most depreciation hit - even better!
