Help Please - I don't understand my chassis number!

Hi,

I have a 2019 G63 and we love it. I've decided to buy a 2020 as well which is a "Stronger than Time" limited edition car.

It has an unusual chassis number - my current G63 starts "WDB" which seems to be the normal, however, the new one starts "W1N".

Now I've had quite a few Mercedes and I've never ween this so I was interested if anybody can shed some light on what "W1N" means?

Any help greatly appreciated!!

You can enter it in one of the several online VIN decoders to see what comes up. The first three characters are just the World manufacturer identifier. Mercedes/Daimler already has several they use. They might have run out of numbers and needed a new identifier or restructured internally. Couldn't find anything on W1N and the database where these are registered requires a subscription as far as I know, but the following Wikipedia page tells you everything you need to know about the VIN. It lists some of the WFIs, but W1N is not on there yet, so it must be new, but pretty sure it's just one more that Daimler/Mercedes uses. The G is not built by Mercedes, it's actually built by Magna Steyr, an Austrian automobile manufacturer that builds several cars for the Germans. They build the BMW 5-series for example as well and a few others like the new Supra and the BMW Z4. I couldn't find their WFI, so it could also be theirs.

I did find a bit of a description on this page (Translate) https://translate.google.com/transla...tellercodes%2F

"CHANGE OF WORLD MANUFACTURER CODES AT MERCEDES-BENZThe vehicles that previously received chassis numbers beginning with the letter combination “WDD ..” will in future receive “ W1K .. ”, models with “ WDC .. ” or “ WDB .. ” will in future receive chassis numbers starting with “ W1N .. ” .

There is one exception, however, for the AMG GT Roadster and Coupé of type R190 or C190 (ie not for the 4-door GT Coupé), which still retains the “WMX.” Identifier at the beginning of the chassis number (often also called VIN) ."
