WSJ 2020 G63 Review

Dan Neil is one of the best automotive journalists alive. Not sure if you can read this without a subscription, but it should be available in a few days if not already:https://www.wsj.com/articles/is-this...le_email_share

Quite interesting is what he writes about city driving. I don’t sense this in the G550. It could be because it doesn’t have cylinder deactivation and is not mapped to restrain the 600+ hp in city driving:
Most of the time, in real-life city driving, the biturbo 4.0-liter V8 and nine-speed transmission sound muted, muffled and unhappy. They are so desperate to save what meager amounts of fuel they can (through stop/start, cylinder deactivation and throttle mapping) that the whole apparatus feels lethargic, with a disconcerting number of one-Mississippis before any changes in delta-v.
What did MB do here, because the engine certainly has no discernible lag...

More interesting was his belief that the gasoline powered G wagon has only 4 years left in its lifespan. Cannot think of any vehicle less appealing than an all electric completely silent g63.

Think current model AMG G CLASS values are high now. Cannot even fathom their future value if he if proven correct.

I’m sure the G will be at least partially electric with the next gen. You mean future values of the current all gas G? Yes, I agree - they should hold strongly.

MB has kinda already hinted that the G class will go electric in the future. Not sure if every class of G wagen will be electric, but there will be an option.
