2020 G550 Braking

Hello!

I've come the conclusion that a G550 is likely what I'll go with. My question is for current '19/20 owners is about braking. How would you rate the braking performance for everyday driving. Strong or do they feel a little overworked. I really appreciate all the feedback!

Thank you!

I'm not sure about 550. But braking is adequete for g63. I've to adjust my braking habit and brake earlier from a non-suv to a suv for daily. Almost hit the car in front on my first day with the car

I did not think the brakes were subpar at all on my test drive; however, it would be nice if they offered a carbon ceramic option.

the braking is more than adequate... but the G class having a lot of suspension travel makes the car nose dive a lot more than a more 'sporty' suv like an X5M or GLE63, etc.
having said that, the nose diving has helped me change my driving habits to brake more gently and from a further distance than before. so i guess i am a less 'spirited' driver now.

I wonder if the Adaptive Suspension would help the braking dive? Needless to say stopping almost 3 tons without any movement is not easy.

I have a G550 and I love it. I use it as a daily driver and the braking is great. Not spongy at all. I drive it pretty fast and the brakes are very responsive. The only thing that bugs me about the vehicle is how agressive the lane keeping assist is. I don't think it can be turned off, and even on the low setting its an aggressive and startling correction - proves the brakes are good though lol.

yes it definitely helps a lot... i have adaptive and its quite a big difference. but still its no X5M or GLE63 or Cayenne... so folks who are used to that kind of handling from an SUV might be a little disappointed.

theres a button for the lane keep assist to the left of the steering column (near the lighting controls). you have to press and hold it to turn it off but it defaults to on everytime u start the car. i do agree that its very aggressive.

all my cars have had ceramics... but asked dealer on my 550 order and he said its not an option. anyone fir theirs with ceramics?... though i ordered black wheels, i hate the break dust with standard brakes, having to replace them, less sensitivity etc ... i also love the large look of calipers.... any options or not worth it? only issue i have ever had was squeeks with ceramics....

I'd echo what others have said about the feel of the G550 under braking; there is a lot of weight up high, and that contributes to a fair amount of dive and sway. I have about 2000 miles on it now, and twice I have braked hard enough to activate ABS, and I will say it is surprising how early it comes on. You are stopping a lot of mass, and there is just no getting away from Physics. I certainly don't see a need for Ceramics; it's hard to imagine anyone driving so aggressively that they are on and off the brakes hard and long enough to induce fade. You will run out of tire before you run out of brake.

OH and +1 on the overly aggressive lane assist and crash avoidance. Good grief. Most other manufactures have designed systems that gently nudge you back in your lane. Not the G wagon, it smacks you across the head and terrifies your passengers.

I got the ceramics on my Porsche even though I have Black wheels - rotor dust shows up on those more than one would think. I also ordered Black wheels on the G - is there a dust problem on the G?

I have a 2019 G550 and the brakes are really quite ordinary especially when the car is full loaded.

I would like to upgrade them to some AMG Carbons if possible.
