W-codes?

W-codes?
The name of this particular forum is "G-Class (W460, W461, W463)". I'm new to the G-Wagen world and I am having difficulty finding an online reference to what these "W-codes" actually mean, mostly because I don't know what they are, so the search term "W-codes" doesn't come up with anything useful. Most lists of MB models I've come across list all the G-class as W463 and do not even include the most recent models.
Can someone please point me to a reference, or at least explain to which years/versions these codes refer? Thanks.
For example, I just got my new 2020 G550. On my paperwork, it just says "2020 G550W4". What does the "W4" mean? One site I came across implied but not explicitly stated that I have a W464?

The "W codes" refer to the subseries variants.
I made the same mistake re: W464, apparently we're referring to the "new gen" one as W463A...

Oops, I forgot to check the most obvious reference: wikipedia. Thanks, I needed that primer to get me up to speed.
With the upcoming electric G-class announced, if the body style is not visually different to the untrained eye then I wonder if it will also be named a variant of W463 rather than a W464? But then again, that's years away.
