How to Check for Remanufactured Engine?
Hello guys. I am about the pull the buy trigger on my first G500. I live in Humboldt, CA and am interested in this vehicle for it's off-highway capabilities. My SL500 rips but she can only get so far down the path in these parts, haha.
The seller of the vehicle I am interested in is claiming that his high mileage 2002 model has had a remanufactured engine installed roughly 20,000 miles ago. I am familiar with the M113 engine from the SL, but my question is: is there any way I can identify whether or not this is true while I am looking at the truck? Anything I can look for in particular that would reveal that the engine is non-original?
I have already tried calling the dealer that the seller claims the work was done at. According to the service department, that particular dealer changed ownership a few years back, and those specific records have been lost.

Get the VIN and go to the EPC and print out the data card for it or have the dealer print it out for you. It will have the original engine serial number on it which you can compare to the number on the engine block. This will tell you have the engine was replaced, but it will not tell you if the new engine was rebuilt or not. I'd be curious why the engine needed to be replaced. Properly maintained the M113 is a pretty reliable lump. Maybe that tells you something about how well the truck has been cared for.
