2020 G63 Infotainment

I know I know, a G wagon is all about driving a beast and off road capabilities but man is Mercedes behind the times on infotainment. Lagging, slow at times, sometimes can’t start car right away with a please wait pop up on screen. I hear MBUX is supposed to be better but it’s 2020 and older cars have a better interface. Other owners would love to hear your thoughts. Don’t get me wrong, like driving it but a vehicle these days is a complete package. Not just looks and brawn. Maybe I’m spoiled by BMW?

Once you get used to COMMAND is it much safer than using a touchscreen, which should be saved for a smartphone and not when driving an almost 3 ton vehicle. And yes, I am old school and believe that driving and having fun doing so is priority #1.

Don’t like mbux..used it for 2 weeks and missed my g63 infotainment. Mbux felt like a gadget system with voice prompt popping up every single time you say a word..’mercedes’ by mistake in any sentence and last but not the least, the apple car play is NOT full screen, unlike current system which is full screen. And current system is plenty quick, leaps and bound better than my 2017 Range Rover

BMW infotainment has faster response time and is more intuitive. However, Mercedes is graphically superior and not that much behind on response time and intuitive design in my opinion. It definitely still feels of the same generation, just different design philosophy.

Do you think this is a one off and my dealer is giving me the quick stiff arm and needs to be checked further?

I have to agree with Longsofty. The system is lagging. It hanged on me when I played music via sd card. Sometimes refuse to start, I have to press it a few more times. Compare to my previous M3 ride, the mb infotainment is not as intuitive, the pertinent info is not laid out as well.

And it doesnt have onboard memory where I can store my music file/library.

I would hope that with MBUX MB will finally get rid of the incredibly annoying, brain dead, non-defeatable speed controlled volume function. Every other auto manufacturer on the planet that has chosen to include that pestilence has also included a means to turn it off. And their systems are continuously variable - MB still uses their 30 year old algorithm which features an extra annoying discrete step every 30 MPH. Get rid of this and the MB infotainment systems would work well.

I test drove a G550 yesterday and the infotainment seems fine to me--although I'm comparing it to the terrible system in my 2016 RR Sport haha.

I am just speaking from experience since I have current models of both BMW and Mercedes. Sure it looks pretty but what good is it when it’s slow and doesn’t let you start car? Speaking of safety, I don’t care about touch screen and wouldn’t use it on G and don’t use on M8 But if a system is lagging and keeps your eyes off road waiting for darn thing to respond. Plus no HUD on G. These facts to me are more dangerous than a touch screen. I didn’t ask question to start a BMW vs mercedes battle because I’m sure the mercedes fan boys that have never owned a BMW Will always have an excuse. I just want to know if others are seeing the same issues and if I need to take back to dealer and push back because they say this is normal on a mercedes.

Had MBUX in a GLS loaner I got recently. Did not like it one bit. The touch buttons on the steering seem better designed for our COMMAND. I don't really see what added features the MBUX brings other than updated graphics.

I don’t miss the BMW infotainment I had in my X7 for a second. Touch screens are hard to use while driving, and the latest generation iDrive has that idiot “touch glass” controller that removes the original, elegant, contorls that you can actually use without having to look at them.

COMAND isn’t flawless, but it’s fairly snappy (Range Rover?), attractive, and fairly intuitive. Put ‘er in “Sport+” and who cares, anyway? ;p

Who even uses the Mercedes UI anyway? I use CarPlay 99% of the time and it's the same whether or not you have COMAND or MBUX. Touch screen would be nice, but I also like the scroll wheel and steering wheel buttons + full screen CarPlay is much better than the MBUX 3/4 screen CarPlay.

yeah, and as I said, in loaner GLE that I had for a couple of wks, CarPlay wasn’t even full screen unlike current system..mbux is useless imo

I would have to agree. Got a loaner last 2 days and MBUX is a joke. So back to my original post, I was wrong, I’m glad my 2020 didn’t come with it. Yah the MB system is pretty but useless. Again, I am speaking from experience having both brands with current models.

Plus it felt like it’s a major cost cutting exercise from MB. In command system the vehicle color is matched to the exterior paint, in mbux it’s all the same generic color

The system in the 2020 sucks. Audi, Porsche and BMW are way ahead. Just my 2 cents. Too many steps to do simple things.

wouldnt CarPlay on vehicle be better if it was wireless? Lower brand cars have wireless. Not MB.

That oversight is easily remedied: https://carplay2air.com/ . The other issues, not so much.

a Fanboy always finds band aids and work around to cover the deficiencies. its 2020, even Toyota has it as OEM feature.

I actually prefer a wired connection. Audio quality via Bluetooth sucks.

wireless car play is not just Bluetooth for audio. It’s WiFi to car.

Interesting. I thought that Bluetooth was used for audio and WiFi for video in Car Play. WiFI should offer a big improvement over Bluetooth, although is still see complaints about poor audio quality with wireless car play. Must be implementation issues.

not really. Once you have shortcuts setup in combination of voice controls, it’s fine.
