2023 G550
If you watch the many test drive reviews on YouTube of the G550 and G63 (albeit, there must be 20 YouTube reviews on the G63 for every one review of a G550), there is a common thread: The test driver punches the G550 to the firewall, and will say something of the ilk of, "it accelerates nicely." However, whenever a G63 goes on a test drive, and the driver punches the throttle, the reaction is universal: The guy's head is instantly snapped back, but hard, into the headrest, and he instantly flashes this huge grin, ear to ear, and shouts out, "Wow!!" If I had bought a G550, I know I would have hugely regretted not getting the G63. I have never once read even one single post saying the OP wishes they had bought a G550, instead of a G63, but the reverse is sometimes posted.

A couple of months ago when I went to finalize my G550 order my dealer got in an available G63. I was tempted to just buy it off the floor and avoid the wait but it was going to be an additional $73,000 for more options, the additional taxes and a $25K ADM. For a DD, a $2500 aftermarket tune on the G550 will get close enough for me to the AMG.

I found the US sales numbers for 2019 and they were around 7400 units.

I have no idea where you get an additional $73,000 for a G63 over a G550. Even if you compare an entirely stripped down 550 to a loaded G63, I can't see where you came up with a $73,000 price delta (there is no ADM if you order and wait). Something is wrong here. A very nicely equipped G63 is maybe an insignificant paltry $15k over a loaded 550. That's less of a price delta than the 10.5% state sales tax I paid on my G63! Once you wait the 9 months (it goes fast!) and receive your G63, you will instantly forget all about the wait. The awesome thing is, going forward, you will have yourself a G63! I would really hate to impulse buy a 550 off the sales floor, and then after 9 months, really regret not having ordered a G63. BTW, my dealer recently had two G550's, both at MSRP, and they literally sat there on the sales floor, at MSRP, unsold for weeks.

2023 G550
The one thing about the G550 vs/ G63 debate that I can't understand is the argument that the 550 is supposedly more capable for off-road use juxtaposed to the G63. The only difference I can see here is the G63 could scrape its side pipes under super extreme off-road conditions, such as rock crawling over gigantic boulders, in which case, I would bet the 550 would also scrape its rocker panels. Let alone, I have never, ever seen a single 2019+ G550 or G63 off road, under these sorts of conditions, whilst doing exactly this (rock crawling) with my 2008 Jeep Rubicon Wrangler. Come to think of it, the only G I have ever seen off-road was on a nice dirt road going to the Sani cans. No worries here about scraping the side pipes on a G63. I think these stories about worries over scraping the side pipes on a G63 are pure dreams in folks' imaginative minds.

But, in the end, everyone has their own opinion and we all see thing differently, so I totally get the fact that some folks prefer the G550 over a G63, for various reasons.

I keep reading about the G63's coming with stock summer wheels. Do you guys have two sets of tires and swap your tires each season or do you throw a set of all season tires on your G63 and call it a day?

I ordered the 22” wheels on my 2021 G 63 not knowing it was going to come with summer tires. I’m going to order 4 285/40/R22” winter tires and swap them in the spring back to summer tires. No one makes 295/40/R22” winter tires. No one makes an all season 295/40R22”.

Slight mistake. The no-waiting 63 was almost 180, my spec was almost 140, difference of 40. Add 25 for adm, that’s 65. Add tax on 65, is $68,900.

The 550 versus 63 argument for off road is usually tied to the rims available and the side pipes. Reviewers are clear to say the 550s exhaust is “tucked in” and having the available 18 inches with AT Falkens is a plus.

I think you are comparing a fairly basic G550 ($140k) to a nicely equipped G63. The latter entails a $25k ADM, if you snag it off the sales floor. The G63 comes equipped standard with some items that are additional cost options on the G550. If you order a G63 and wait 9 months (no ADM), the price delta is pretty small.

My dealer only sells at MSRP, I asked about a g63, they said they weren’t sure if they could get me one (low volume G dealer).

I ordered the 550, saved myself some money and am good with it.

If they called me tomorrow and said they have a G63 on their lot, I would buy it. My point is, for me anyway, I can justify buying either, I am mostly interested in “earliest available.”
