Rear License Plate Bolt Size

Hi All —

Are there specific bolt/screw size to install the rear license plate?

Thanks in advance.

I used M5 sized hardware. They fit well overall, slightly loose, but they're what I had lots of on hand. You may be able to slightly larger, but then you'll be getting into the weird fractional sizes (SAE) and M6 may fit, but I didn't try. You'll need screws and nuts on the back side, along with washers.

I had the same issue.

What I don’t understand is why MB didn’t install those nylon/plastic inserts in the holes so we could just use the normal license plate screws.

I ended up using stainless with a nylon sleeved nut to keep it from getting loose over time.

I placed those nylon/plastic things behind the bracket and used the typical sheet metal screw. It's important to not let the screw rest on the bumper if you are picky and don't want scratches in the paint. Even though it's behind the plate, it still gets messed up if the bolt/screw is too long. The correct way is simply to use a short nut and bolt.

Yes G-Wagon's have had the same bolt/but for the US rear license plate holder for over 30yrs - and carried it over to the New Gen...

If we want to get "Freaky" - the contact between the back of your License Plate and the G-Wagen License Plate Holder over time causes rust/corrosion on the holder due to minor electrolysis of dis-similar metals - everyone who has had a "older G" knows about that License Plate Holder corrosion but assumes it comes from inadequate corrosion protection on the holder.

Placing any type of plastic insulating the back of the plate from the will stop that corrosion from starting... at the dealership we have CPO plate inserts used for cards on the line that make excellent "insulators"
