I'm installing a backup camera along with an Alpine Halo 9 unit (much needed). I know Mercedes mounts the the OEM cameras high on the rear door overlooking the spare, but it seems that it's hard to gauge how close the actual spare is to an object if the spare is partially blocking the camera view.
It seems placing the camera down low and adjusting the distance markers through the unit to match how much the spare sticks out would be the best method.
Please let me know your experiences either with the OEM location or down lower.
The new G has the backup camera below the spare behind a pop open cover. Mounted low, the camera will get covered with mud and snow if not protected this way, and will be useless part of the time. When I installed a dashcam in my G, I bought a unit with front and rear cams, and mounted the rear unit on the inside rear glass at center. Don't know if this is an option for your backup cam, but something you might consider. Mounted high, though, blocks the view of what's immediately behind your vehicle.
