463....A??

What’s with the “A” and why is there a separate forum for it?

Yeah but it’s been in this forum for 2y and just as a 463 .... what’s the “A” about?

And as an owner of 2016,17 and a 2019, I hope the 2019+ folks don’t think they’re better than everyone else!?!

"463A" is the unofficial designation of the new model. A lot of people on here felt that a separate forum seemed to make sense:
  • The new model is really a totally different vehicle, sharing very few parts with the old model.
  • Topics for the new model tend to center around ordering, options, delivery times, whereas old model topics are more around fixing parts and maintenance.

Besides, everyone knows the old models are better....

The downside to the carryover of the "463" designation to the MY2019+ trucks is that it has contaminated the replacement parts databases. Nobody, not even MB, knows for sure if a particular part fits until somebody tries to install it. I'm returning a set of front mud guards that MB said fits my 2019G. I just installed a rear wiper that Napa's database said doesn't fit.

I read somewhere that it was meant so the 2019+ is looked at as a facelift rather than an actual new model - and avoid all the regulatory requirements of new cars. Can anyone confirm that?

I can believe end-running the regulatory red tape. This is what Boeing did with its 737-MAX -- it omitted information about the plane's MCAS operation so as not to bring attention to a significant change that would have impeded FAA approval. Guess we know how that turned out. MB seemed to tout the new G design ambiguously. At one point, MB's product manager (in a YouTube video) boasted about the "all new" design that carried over only 3 parts from the earlier G (guess he forgot about the V8 twin turbo). But then there was much emphasis placed on how the design remained so unchanged that unless old and new were parked side-by-side, the new one can't be differentiated. I guess this is what all companies do - try to convince customers that a product is new and improved while convincing regulators it's the same-old same-old.

Regulatory requirements must be met by all cars for sale unless they get a waiver. The regulatory bodies don't care if you designed the car yesterday or in 1979, if you want to sell it today you need to meet the current requirements.

I think they kept the same internal designation because they originally started the refresh as a facelift (as I heard in an interview with the head engineer or someone like that) and then as they started to make changes they eventually ended up re-doing everything. I guess by that point they designed to keep W463 rather than go back and change all the part numbers, etc.
