Question Headlight noise

Hello!

EDIT: It turned out to be the tweeter speaker inside the rear passenger door. Only this one speaker outputting the high pitch sound, and only while headlights are on.

I have a little gremlin in the G55 and thought I'd reach out to see if anyone has experienced something similar, or can provide a decent suggestion of where I should start...

To keep it short; whenever I turn on the headlights I get a high pitch whining noise from somewhere inside the car. Sound is consistent and is always present while headlights are on. It goes away the second your turn the lights off. Positioning lights or low/high beam make no difference. With DRL only (LED strip below headlights) there is no noise, so "fortunately" it's only bothering me while driving in the dark.

Due to some issues with my hearing I have a hard time locating the source of the sound, but I suspect it's coming somewhere from the passenger side, low down towards the floor.

Any suggestions on what could be the cause of this, or where I should start looking?

Thanks,
CrashworkZ

If your headlights are LED, the noise could be coming from the power controller. There are inductor components (wire coils wound on a sandwiched ferrite bobbin) contained in the controller, and sometimes the bobbins become loose and "sing" at some sub-harmonic frequency of that used by power controller. Repair is possible, but replacement might be more practicable.

Thanks for the suggestions. To my knowledge the headlights are OEM HID's, no aftermarket LED installed aside the DRL's, but those don't cause the noise.

The HIDs are controlled through a relay or most likely an electronic switch that could be making the noise. Do the lights flicker at all when the noise is present?

No, the lights do not flicker from what I can see. Other than the noise I've noticed no symptoms of anything being wrong.

HID headlights use a high voltage power supply that converts the 12 volts to around 25,000 volts to start the lights. Once lit, the only need 80-90 volts to keep running. It sounds like one of the inductors in your lights is "singing". Because these supplies are typically potted, your only option would be to replace the noisy unit.

Thank you for the advise, it makes sense it would be something like that. Any suggestion where to look for the unit? Maybe then I could also locate the sound.

Not owning a G-class yet, I really can't help much. I would expect the supply to be very close to the headlight assembly or more likely, inside it.

So I have an update on this topic and thought I would share. A bit embarrassed for not locating the source of the sound earlier, but it turned out to be the tweeter speaker inside the rear passenger door. Only this one speaker outputting the high pitch sound, and only while headlights are on.

Might have to take it in to the dealer, at least now I know where to point them.

Let us know how much they charge you to disconnect the speaker.

Haha sure, probably won't be a lot more than the mandatory "diagnostics fee" (listening to the sound?). No the car is under warranty from MB, and if stereo related it should be covered, otherwise I'd never consider letting the stealership try to deal with it.
