Dip Stick or Oil Level Sensor
Can someone with a MY2015-2018 W463 having the M176 engine tell me if they have a conventional dipstick for checking oil level, or if they have the electronic oil level system that's read from the instrument cluster?

C'mon guys! Doesn't anyone know where the hood release lever is and what an oil dipstick looks like? Y'all oughta be topping off your ws washer tanks this time of year anyway, unless you normally pay a dealer $50 to do this for you.

I don't have a G550 but I will try to help you out if I can.
Most if not all Mercedes have the hood release lever on the left side of the driver below the light switches near the bottom of the trim piece just above the pedals, you can't miss it as it is bright red. It will be on the right side if your car is a right hand drive vehicle. Once you pull that, you will hear a noise and you will notice your hood will pop up slightly. Go outside and lift it up gently then hunt for the latch release and release it. Once done, lift up the hood and let the hydraulics bring it to the top, make sure everything is secure and won't fall back down (safety is first) before putting your head in to search around.
The dipstick should be yellow colour coded with a cutout ring for you to put you finger in to grab. Some MB vehicles will have the dipstick red colour coded that has a cylinder tip which you use both of your fingers to pinch and grab out.
The best way to see if your vehicle has a dipstick or not would be to check the instrument cluster ASSYT plus and check oil level, if that section exists then your car does not have a dipstick. As far as simply answering your question, If I recall correctly the M176 used in the G550 does not have a dipstick but I might be wrong.

Oops, made a mistake, I mean in the Service menu, you don't need to go into ASSYT Plus, sorry about that. Once in Service look for something called Engine oil level, if it exists, your car does not have a dipstick.

My 2019 G550 has no dipstick -- this I know. It has the looney-tune electronic oil sensor system based on a roulette algorithm, and one is expected to scroll through the instrument panel screens to read the oil level while driving. My understanding is that the M176 engine in 2019+ G550s was used in earlier model year Gs between 2015 and 2018. According to several online electronic parts catalogs (EPCs) for the G, there is a dipstick tube and dipstick p/n listed for the M176 engine. However, I don't know that this is accurate as these EPCs list several parts as being compatible with my G which are in fact not compatible, and also list several parts as being not compatible with my G, but in fact are compatible.
I am trying to learn from an owner of a 2015-2018 G with the M176 engine if this prior generation G is equipped with a dipstick, and if this oil sensor system was introduced with the 2019 remodel. My objective is to determine if I can retrofit a dipstick on my G so that I have access to accurate oil level measurements. It's somewhat surprising to me that nobody with a 2015-2018 G knows whether or not his/her truck has a dipstick, and equally surprising that nobody is even interested in finding out.
