Odd Repair Case / Possible Dispute with MB

I took my 2017 G550 to service at a MB-dealership in California in February. Unfortunately my transmission was leaking and required a new seal. The OEM part is 177-010-4805 and was replaced with a newer part, that according to the dealership does not fit the G-Wagon. They ordered the same part multiple times without any luck. Last week they announced that this issue went all the way up to the Head of Parts at the headquarters of MB in Germany. They promised that if they cannot solve it they will have to provide me with a new engine, which was ordered last week.

Today I got a message saying that apparently there is an 'engine maintenance kit' by Magna Steyr in Austria, that includes the older rubber seal that we need, which was now ordered. So the new engine is off the table until they tried this.

Either way, it's been three months now without my car (they gave me an S-Class loaner, so not too bad but still...) and I am wondering if anyone has any experience with a case like this? Do I even have to pay for service, can I ask for a remuneration? The dealership is saying that so many other clients are having the same issues.

Let me know your thoughts please.

Sounds like an entitlement issue.

I'm not sure I understand your position about remuneration. Your truck is five years old and out of warranty. My concern would be about how much the repair is going to cost me. It appears that the dealership has been accommodating by searching for the part and giving you a loaner. I would be happy that they found a parts kit and didn't have to resort to an engine replacement. Looks like you came out on the better side of these alternatives from a cost perspective.

Part delays are everywhere and across every manufacture these days. I had one of my Range Rover LWB out of service for nearly half a year due to a faulty part that was back ordered as the supplier went bankrupt.

About last year my G63 needed a exhaust manifold and my truck was apart and sat for 4 months while they waited for the part to be made again.

Both these instances I had no loaner as loaners are short all across the board too.

I am not understanding why they would even offer a new engine over a transmission seal?

They gave you a new S class as a loaner and are paying out of pocket for this repair. I’d say that’s more than generous. You should be happy they are doing anything at all. Some peoples entitlement never failes to amaze me
