How do I install this front brush (bumper, bull) guard?

After narrowing down my search to two different G55’s I settled on the 2004 with only 26,000 miles. Overall the truck is exceptional with minimal wear, drives and sounds great.

One question I have for this forum is how do you install the factory brush guard?
Does the bumper have to be removed or holes drilled in the bumper? I have the original 2004 bumper.

This is an OEM guard complete with mounting hardware.

i thought I remember reading somewhere I did not have to cut or drill the bumper. However, it looks to me like you will have to drill 4 holes in the bumper to account for the mounting hardware.

Any advice from those who have done this?

Thanks

Holes will have to be drilled into the bumper. This can be with the bumper on the G or off, up to you.

A lot of attention needs to be paid to the location of the holes drilled, to make sure the brush guard is as centered as possible. Mine, installed probably by the selling dealer here in the US way back when, was installed about 1/4" off to one side, which drives me nuts.

You can sort of see the drilled holes in the bumper.

Here are all the brackets, hardware, etc. I replaced all of my hardware with Stainless steel stuff from McMaster - Part Numbers all listed in my build thread.

Here is the bumper folded down. Best way to assemble is to mount all the brackets first, then install the uprights and slowly start tightening down all the other pieces of the brush guard on the G. It 99% won't fit if you fully assemble the brush guard first and try to put it on. After you have everything mounted, you can loosen the brackets, bars, etc to fine tune the fit.

For securing the brush guard in the up position, I removed the 1/4 quick release bolt and bult receiver and replaced with a normal M14 hex head bolt with lock washer. I feel this makes mounting much more secure at the expense of slightly longer time to lower the brush guard bar by ~2x. It also saves you having to purchase the special tool. Parts for this also listed in my thread.

Thank you!! That solves basically all my questions. I’m going to see what the Mercedes dealership will charge me to mount it. I like working on cars but recently I’ve been extremely busy and I want it done right. Being off by 1/4” would make me a bit crazy also!

MB dealership quoted me $550 to install the brush guard. Is this normal or high?

i don’t mind paying I just want to make sure this price is in line.

Might as well ask here...

I took my brush guard off to paint it and now I am unable to get it back on...it doesn't completely slide into place and I can't push it back far enough to get those weird cylindrical bolts to catch. Any advice on how to re-mount it?
