2020 g550
Buying a 2016-2018 g63 instead of new body..

Owned a 2021 g550 which was a lemon and haven’t looked into getting a g since..

was looking to get into a 2016-2018 g63 with under 20k mileage.

would you guys suggest staying away or can I get a good truck for 80-100k less than a 2023?

market near me is still 25-30k over asking for g63 and it’s 210k before tax which is absurd.

curious if anyone’s gone w the older style instead of a new one recently?

thanks !

In terms of price, yes, you can get into a '16-'18 G63 for $80K-$100K less than a '23. It's still a hell of a truck and if cost weighs heavily in your decision making then it's almost a no brainer. 80%-90% of the fun, at half the price. What you miss out on are the more comfortable ride, and some modern conveniences, but for the price it's maybe something to put up with. Not a lot of sub-20K mile units out there, but look for well maintained ones up to 30K-35K miles or so, and you will probably be OK. Extended warranty is a decent peace of mind. Another member on here had a catastrophic engine failure on his '17 and it's going to be $40K+ to replace the motor. Luckily has an extended warranty that "hopefully" will cover it.

Do you have a link to the thread? Really interested in seeing it.

The M157/M278 engines are funny. There’s plenty out there over 200k miles but there’s also stories out there across the board of catastrophic failures. There’s a few common reoccurring issues that cause failure.

I have heard the new body G is a much better car to drive, also the AMG suspension is pretty firm compared to your G550... definitely check it out. I can provide extended warranty coverage on the G63 AMG, from our provider Freedom Warranty, accepted at all Mercedes-Benz dealers and licensed service centers in the country, you can reach me at tgibson@highline-autos.com or (855) 924-1333 for questions, quotes and an example contract that explains coverage.

I don't think he has documented it in a thread, I just know him personally and he shared the info with me. I concur, lots of high mileage motors still running strong, and a few with some common issues. In his case it was just a random issue I think. I believe the technician said the wrist pin had excessive play causing the piston to have play and damaged cylinder 4 wall. Since the wall wasn't repairable they are saying it needs a new motor. It's been a week and they are waiting on the extended warranty company to respond.

I have had all three a 2015 G550, 2021 G63 and 2017 G63.

If you have other luxury cars the older model is the way to go for me. I love the feel and look of the older model vs the new one. The simplicity of the truck is what I love about it. A $75 dongle for CarPlay and there is nothing I want that the new one has and it doesn't. The whole idea of a G Wagon is a go anywhere tough machine why fluff it up? Plus with the right model the interior is no slouch and again looks better than the newer to me.

The G550 is softer in a way and honestly with a tune never lacked for HP as it isn't usable in these trucks anyway.

Remember people come on these forums to seek out help when they have issues not to praise a car so that is why you hear about issues on these forums.

Mine is just out of warranty and although Highline has great pricing I am just letting it go.

Mine has approx 38k and it looks new in every way so miles isn't always an indication of condition. Approx $100k gets you a sub 40k truck in great shape. I was selling it first to by a Galactic Beam with under 10k but was not anywhere as clean as mine is. I do have my eye on a custom ordered Bentaga Speed.

I like the older body look more personally. It’s a more true G in every sense. Long term, also much more reliable.

if reliability matters, get a G550. If you want a turbo, the 16-18s will have one and are known to be much more reliable than the G63 variant. They’re actually incredibly dependable.
