2017 G63 AMG, 2019 G550
‘19 G550 V. ‘23Escalade

Sorry if this isn’t the right space for this post, but I can’t believe I did this:

My wife and I both had G wagons. Mine was a 2017 G63 AMG and hers is a 2019 G550. For the past 10+ years we have cycled our cars where she would get the new one and I would take hers since she isn’t hard on them. This past October I screwed up the cycle and traded in my 2017 G63 AMG (owned since new and have driven some sort of G wagon since 2003) for a 2023 Escalade and have regretted doing it everyday since. The G63 didn’t have any issues and had a 3 year extended warranty that I bought through the MB dealer. The Escalade is nice and full of tech, but the quality just isn’t there when comparing to a German manufacturer. My young son plays baseball and when we have tournaments on the weekend the extra space is nice (we made the impulsive trade of vehicles after a looong tournament weekend). The Escalade has Super Cruise, Rear Monitors, 4WD, air suspension, I have done everything one can do to tastefully personalize it to stand out from the crowd, but I still can’t fall in love with it. In my opinion and maybe I’m being a little hard on it, it seems disposable, not likely to last more than a handful of years like an appliance. The G Wagon is more of a machine and will last decades.

As mentioned above, my wife has a 2019 G550 that she is about to trade in when her new G550 comes in March. But now I’m thinking of trading the Escalade in and driving her 2019 G550. Her G550 has approximately 48K miles and an extended 3 year warranty also bought through the dealer.

So the question is and what I need help with, should I continue to drive a brand new Escalade with all the bells and whistles (that are admittedly nice) or should I sell it and take this as an opportunity to get back into a G Wagon a drive her 2019 G550 for the next few years?

2005 G55K
I think you'll get a pretty biased answer from this crowd. All the new tech, bells and whistles are definitely nice, but that really was never what the G was about. A majority of its charm and what has kept them from depreciating as badly as every other SUV ever made.

As is no surprise, my vote will be to take the 'hand-me-down' G550 and enjoy it. If you like/want the increased performance of an AMG, you can always look for a G63, either W463a or W463. Demand for the W463a isn't what it used to be, but there is still a lot of demand at fair pricing, so you could probably go back to a '17/'18 G63 and pocket the difference if that floats your boat.
