Whats your thoughts on a G55 VS G63 ...

Im considering buying a 2005+ G55 or a G63.

The biggest concern with the G63 is how reliable it will be, especially with the cylinder wall scoring issues all of the TT V8 have.

Whats your thoughts ???

.

If you’re concerned about reliability then the G55 might be the better choice for you. The M113 is pretty well regarded for being bulletproof.
If you want to go newer and are worried about cylinder scoring, just look for a G63 with a full service history that’s been fully maintained. You can borescope the engine to look for scoring, pay particular attention to cylinder 5. With proper maintenance and early oil changes, the M177 should be fine.

Cheers and happy hunting!

Go for the G55. The M113 supercharged V8 is far more robust and reliable than the twin-turbo M157 in the G63, which is known for those exact cylinder scoring issues. The G55 is the much safer bet for long-term ownership.

There is probably some logic to which one is more reliable but the 'somewhat' more modern interior of the G63 appeals to me more.

2015 ml63 amg (w166/m157) | 2015 g550 (w463/m273)
if you considering a g55, then i would also consider 2013-15 g550. there are other threads on this topic. i had my heart set on g55 and, after a lot research and test drives, i chose 2015 g550 over g55 and, i'm glad that i did. g55 motor is very robust and m273 in g550 engine is also quite reliable. it seems like seven speed in m273 uses power more effectively vs 5 speed in m113k. i did not consider g63 because i have ml63 with m157 engine and i understand the risks, maintenance and expense of owning m157 engine. if reliability is a concern then you may want to avoid m157 engine.

i posted this elsewhere:
"i have this 5.5l turbo motor (m157) and the 5.5l naturally aspirated (m273) motor in two different vehicles. the m157 requires a lot more maintenance, is much more expensive to maintain and considerably less reliable. yes, m157 has a ton of power. all that power is not very usable on a g wagon that one shouldn't drive much over 100mph and is speed limited to 130mph. m273 motor has plenty power. 0-60mph in six seconds is plenty fast for any vehicle, especially for a clumsy suv, like the g wagon, which can easily tip over. given the choice, in a w463 g wagon, even if intention is primary street use, i definitely recommend NA m273 engine over the m157 turbo."

again, you should be able to find existing threads on this topic.

This was exactly the story I heard elsewhere and a major reason why I bought the G55. I have MORE than enough power in mine!

G63 Now - G55 Past
I just wanted to follow up on this thread, 1st off thanks for all of the input !

I ending up buying a 2008 G55 with 130K miles on it, its super clean, totaly rust free and has been really well cared for.

Soon after that I found a 2014 G63 with 32K miles, and 1 year / 40K miles left on a warranty. Its also super clean, totaly rust free and is as new, it was to good for a deal to pass up.

It may not be the smart thing, but I will likly be selling the G55 soon.

congrats. keep the auto maintenance budget topped off for the unexpected potentially pricey issues that can arise with m157 engine. as long as you understand potential issues and are ok with the higher maintenance costs, it's all good.

One thing to note is with your '08 if you want to hang the tail out with the rear locker out of a corner then you can't do that anymore in the G63 since the lockers need 4L to be enabled. Pretty notable if you take it out into the deserts and mountains and need to get it on in that way or just to roam with any or all of the lockers on.
