W463 Rear Door / Hatch Adjustment

I searched and couldn't find anything. My rear hatch sometimes has trouble closing and looking at the detent on the inner side, the door is sitting a few mm low from where it should be. Before I start taking panels off, is adjusting as simple as remove the rear panel and get access to bolts or are there some other gotchas I should prepare for?

Yes, it's generally that simple.

Remove the interior trim panel to access the hinge bolts. Loosen them slightly to adjust the hatch position up or down, side to side. Check the striker plate on the body for wear, as that can also cause closing issues. A little adjustment often makes a big difference.

As said above, it is that easy. Remove the driver side rear cargo area trim and the plastic panel will slide out. Then remove the CD changer, pull back the carpet from the top side, and unscrew the metal cover panel. This will give you access to both upper and lower hinges.

Be ready to have a jack or someone strong to hold the door from falling to its lowest position as it will fall since it is so heavy. I used a floor jack with a stack of wood a cushion on the bottom edge of the door. Then before loosening anything, I marked the bolts/hinge on the inside where they were so it would be easy to adjust/position them when tightening. I used tape. The bolts have adjustment up/down, and in/out.

Also check the striker plate/guide that it is aligned with the mating features on the door. This can easily push the entire door up and down when you close it.
