Do you think Mercedes would still be making a civilian G wagon if the demand wasnt there? How many people actually take these things hard offroading? I would argue that the target demographic for this truck is no longer the offroaders who know how to use the 3 locking differentials, and it is all the other people that were mentioned. Why do you think LA and Dubai are the largest markets for this truck? It's a status symbol. The scarcity of the truck only reinforces that image.

You think the average joe who wants to take a truck over a bunch of rock trails is planning on dropping $200-250k (with ADM) on it so that they can rough up those 22" summer tires and scuff the magno paint? You may as well buy a Jeep 392 for that job and keep the G in the driveway for the post rock hopping starbucks run.
Or maybe you should buy the 2017 model with the solid axles if you are a true hardcore offroader anyway.

Personally, I bought it cause I like it - end of. Makes me feel good driving it - whether I'm parking at a hotel and everyone is looking at me, or if I'm driving alone on a trail. Call it ego, call it image, I don't care. The price of the car is insignificant to me. As such I will be upgrading to the facelift model when it comes out because I want the latest, and won't bat an eyelid in doing so.

I am a typical G63 owner and I am the reason why older versions depreciate.

The bottom line is this. 99.99% of G buyers DO NOT go off-roading. They buy it for status, exclusivity etc. Those same buyers will welcome the latest tech and upgrades. I don't suspect the 19-21 prices to tank but they will be much more reasonable and in line with historical depreciation once the refreshed model becomes more commonplace. If the 19-21 prices stay where they're at or as some of you suggest go higher than what will the prices be for the W463A? Call it what you want but this is still relatively speaking a mass produced Mercedes. It's not a one La Ferrari or rare exotic car with limited production. Even if 19-21 prices were MSRP or lower I'd still wait for the refresh and trust me, I'm not the only one willing to do so.
