Wheel/tire combo for most side wall on AMG G63

Hey everybody, I have 2021 G 63 with the 22 inch AMG wheels. I’m looking for the smallest sized wheels and largest tires that will fit without any modifications. I want to take my G out on the soft sand on the East coast beaches and you really need to air down. With the current setup there I pretty much no side wall.

Are 20 inch wheels the smallest diameter that will fit? And what’s the largest all terrain tire I can fit without rubbing?

Thanks in advance!

I don't think anything smaller than 20" will clear the brake calipers. If you don't want to lift your truck you might clear a 305 series tire, but a 285/55 would be a safer bet. Wheel offset will play a roll to some extent. For sand I'd probably suggest the 285, and air down when you go offroad. Kind of a pain, but it will get you the best traction.

I ran 285/45/22 which were 32.1” and they just cleared without rubbing. 285/55/20 are 32.3”. I don’t think they will clear but if they do it’ll literally be by a mm.

pretty safe to assume the spare wheel is 20 inch? I haven’t taken the cover off yet, but it’s definitely not the AMG wheel. I may end up buying a set of the black 20 inch standard wheels and putting a more aggressive tire on those.

I’m happy to air down. Used to have a Jeep I’d take crawling/beaching so I’ve got tire deflators and a nice ARB portable compressor.

Yes the spare is a 20” oem rim from the g550 that’s silver/black color matched to the regular wheels.

Go with 285/45/22 all terrain - that's what I'm doing and wanted the same thing. Hodog16 was kind enough to advise the group on this.

There’s not really much room to air down with 22’s. I’m gonna be in soft sand.

Forgive me if this is obvious, but the clearance issue would be height correct? If that’s the case I suppose I could run a 285/50/20. It looks like that’s 31.22 inches but stills gives me almost an inch more side wall compared to what’s on it.

Clearance issue is when you turn the vehicle at full lock in either direction, will the tires rub against the plastic inner lining of the wheel well. Going straight you have more clearance of course. Rear tires are fine.

Height comes into play depending on your parking situation. OEM tires are 31.2 inches or so, so by going to 32.1 inches you are raising the height of the vehicle by half an inch or so, so be careful with some parking decks.

Mercedes has OEM 20" all-terrains (275/50/20 Pirelli Scorpion ATR) that go on the trail package, that may be a good starting point since those tires were selected by MB. Not as meaty as other options though.

To give you a sense of how tight the 32.1" tires are, refer to my pictures in the middle of this thread:

Gotcha. In that case, some small hub centric wheel spacers should help with clearance issues if height is not a concern.

Those ATs on your G look great btw.

Thanks—that was my last one. Sold the car in February and the wheel/tires over the summer. Back to the oem 22” setup in current ride.

I love my 22” wheels but kills the capabilities of the truck. So I bought the 20” amg wheels an installed the bfg k02’s in 285/55R20. Couldn’t be happier…

Beautiful truck. No rubbing? I’m leaning towards the black version of those same wheels since I have the black brush guard.

I just put the nitto 285/45/22 on mine

you won’t fit 20”a on the front.

I really wish I could but sadly the brakes are huge.

no rubbing but very very tight.

20” will fit over the brakes at all four tires. The spare tire is a 20” rim.

have you tried?

g500 no issues but g63?

I couldn’t find one with a 20” on the front - it’s already very tight on the 22s

I have the 20’s, it is the AMG wheel made for g63, it fits fine, and @krazyk86cu the 285x55R20 tires does not rub at all and it is a great tire with no road noise. I had them on my Raptor for years and I specifically bought these wheels to instal these tires. Highly recommend them

Those look great! Yes I’ve put my spare on a G63, plus the fact there are 20” oem options so they have to fit.

Would love to get AT tires on again, but since I’ve got a 2023 coming, I’m going to wait.

Any idea on the offset/backspacing on those wheels?

I ended up buying a set of the black OEM wheels that match my spare, but I’m just now realizing they are an 8.5 inch wide rim unlike yours, which is a 9.5 inch rim. Pretty sure I can still fit the K02s on the wheel, but they may not fit without spacers depending on the backspacing/offset difference.

Sorry to revive the dead, but it’s soon beach weather! Haha

Just wanted to check in. Still no rubbing with the 285/55/20 KO2's even when off roading? Did you need any spacers? Looks great!! @Ilksurfer

Thanks! The tires did amazing on the beach. Even in the super soft sand. Just aired down to around 17 psi. No rubbing and no spacers needed. If you want the tires perfectly flush or beyond the fenders a bit spacers won’t hurt, but I’m happy as it is.

I have a question for those of you who have switched to plus sized tires.
Does the Spare Tire Ring still cover the larger 32" and/or 33" tires?
Thanks in advance!
