2017 G65 or 2019 G63
Hi all,
I am looking to buy a G class and I am hoping for some inputs from long term owners with experience from both the old G and the new G. I am cross shopping between a 2017 G65 in immaculate condition (~8000 miles) and a 2019 G63 (~25000 miles). They are similarly priced at the moment. I have a feeling that the G65 may depreciate slower as it is 2 years older.
Which one should I choose? Obviously the 2019 model is going to be newer with all the modern techs but owning a V12 (G65) is just so damn cool! I don't really mind if the car is harsher in the older model. I am mostly concerned about highway handling in the older model though... Is there really a huge difference between the recirculating ball steering and the rack/pinion setup in the 2019? Can the older G65 be capable of taking my family of four on the occasional longer road trips? Gas mileage be damned! I only care about the smile per gallon!
It is very difficult to get test drives on these cars as the dealerships would only allow test drives after I have paid a deposite to show that I am "serious". thanks so much for your inputs!

We had both a 2020 G63 and a 2017 G65 at the same time. Lifted both, and both were great in their own right. G65 wins for being able to lift it and run 35" tires easily (relatively), and massive torque, which is fun. The newer G63 wins for comfort, driveability, and new tech. Ultimately my wife decided she liked the massage seats, so the new one stayed, and the old one sold. Can't go wrong either way, but if you want something you can take on longer road trips you need to get the G63. Your family will thank you. Definitely more space inside, and more comfortable.

Have had both. The G65 is just so special, but obviously drives significantly worse than the newer G63. We kept our 2022 G63 over the G65 just because it's more usable, but they are a dime a dozen. We'll probably be getting another W463 G63 at some point.
