G63 Is gearbox behaving normally? Upshifting readily.

I have a 2022 G63

I find that even in sports+ mode I can be going only 30-35mph and the truck is already in fifth gear. Is this normal behaviour? I feel the gearbox up-shifts far too easily.

I also find in fifth gear if you put your foot down, it takes quite sometime to accelerate, like there is a noticeable delay. Combined with the weight of the truck, it can be scary when nothing happens.especially when trying to merge and you think you’re in a low gear but you aren’t.
I can only accelerate fast, if I am manually shifting down to second gear.
Is it by design that it is upshifting so eagerly? Do others have similar experience? What gear are you in at similar speeds?

Is your vehicle affected by the faulty fuel pump recall? Some of the lag could be due to poor fuel pump performance. Mine was even stalling as I pushed the pedal until the pump was replaced.

In S+ mode mine is in 4/5th gear around that speed depending on how much I'm pushing on the throttle.

There's also a lag on mine when I push the pedal hard that's noticeable. I think there's a decent amount of pedal travel before the throttle kicks in.

No solid proof, have owned a 19, 20, 21 and 22 G63. It seems the ECO start-stop, 4-cylinder mode, and throttle response have gotten worse in the latter years. Maybe increased emissions crap no idea. Very annoying and makes the car not driveable in Comfort mode ever. Sport and Sport + in the '22 remains laggy and delayed throttle response with a surge of late power delivery.

Thanks for the responses. Seems by design then. It works fine if I consistently put it in 1st or 2nd. But here in Atlanta people try to merge on the interstate slow, and sometimes I forget to shift down and catch myself with no power, at exactly the wrong moment. Need to make more of a concerted effort to always downshift I think.

yea I definitely feel it upshifts quickly for fuel economy purposes. Comfort it would be in seventh gear at 40mph. But even my gt63s saloon did that in most modes. It would only tend to downshift or not upshift aggressively in race mode. Alas the g63 does not have a race mode.
