New Electric G Class Look
#27
It's all about exclusivity and prestige. Rivian's are nice but they are starting to become a dime a dozen at least where I live.
Mercedes has to get production aligned with demand--the last thing they want is any EQG languishing on lots or needing deep discounts like the EQE/EQS's.
JLR just released more info about the Range Rover EV, so it'll be interesting to see how both of these iconic brands do going electric.

It's made in the same Magna factory in Austria as the Fisker Ocean, which is why I'm not buying either one. They should just license the Mercedes logo and let other people slap it on cars made in China. Globalism works both ways and things change, baby! LOL

I get what you're saying and its one of the reason why the G is superior in my eyes due to the fact that it doesn't share a chassis or major components with any other brand.
But it seems like it wont be stopping anytime soon. Heck, if someone wants to gift me a Pagani I definitely wont be turning it down just because it has an AMG engine.

I must admit the two-tone Maybach-like paint job looks pretty slick. And apparently someone came to their senses and brought the spare tire back.

Definitely not a spare tire

They exterior says EQ but interior looks like its straight out of a gas vehicle. Looks kind of like a hodgepodge of parts slapped together to me rather than a ground-up build of a new G EV. But I like the concept anyways. Nobody cares about miles per kilowatt hour off roading and you'll never have to worry about hydrolocking the motor in the middle of a river crossing. Its getting a little late to change if its going to ship in 9 months or so though. I dunno... :hmm:

I've been watching the Maybach EQS 680 SUVs just sit at the dealers near me for over a month now. They even have them at the Kmart blue
light special price of $197,950 with no takers. Good luck getting over MSRP for an electric G!
I might trade-in my EQE 500 SUV for one though, if I don't go with a Range Rover electric SUV.

Just because you don't like the electric G doesn't mean others wont like it (I personally don't like any EVs). Some sales people here have already stated there is a huge line up for this car and Id wager it will do very well in big/rich markets like LA and NY.

Real off-roaders don't buy a brand new G63 or G EV either. Not many ppl can stomach $185k+ just for off-road use. Not to mention, none of the damage it incurs while off-roading are covered by warranty. Not sure if you're aware but G parts/repairs are not cheap.
Unless it's many years down the line, these wont be going off road. It seems you just don't understand the demographic that actually buys this car: sheikhs, celebs, athletes, housewives and wealthy ppl in general will be lining up for this shiny new toy.
The fact that it definitely stands out amongst a sea of smart toaster on wheels EVs (like your EQE) will make it an attractive proposition for many.

Which is why I'm considering one. Logically a manual trans V6 Rubicon Jeep makes more sense but at my age I have to admit I probably won't be be going cave diving much. My knee was swollen for two weeks just from weeding my rose garden. *sigh* But as someone with more money than brains I still want the option of treking to a remote location in middle of a central American jungle. That's why you buy a G instead of Maybach which, quite frankly, is much more impressive if you're cruising up and down Rodeo Drive or around the south of France.

I walked away from allocation... no thx... cant stand electric cars.... hybrids maybe... but electric???? Come on... ill enjoy my '25 g63 when it comes in... mild hybrids fine... i have 2 of those with MB, getting hybrid lambo etc... i totally get electric motors backed with a real engine... full electric is a fad, will die. I doubt electric G will hold value like my 22g63 has. I am so against this electric movement but maybe i am in minority.

There will be an initial hype just like when the Taycan and EQS and Audi E-Tron GT were released but it will wane very quickly once the die hard electric fans get their cars. The vast majority of buyers (G or otherwise) do not want a pure electric! By the end of the year they will start piling up in the dealer lots just like all those EQSs. EVs are losing 50% of their value within 2 years and practically disposable once the battery goes bad because the battery will cost more than the car in 7 years and no one really wants that kind of depreciation for their G. Also electrics are 30% more likely to get into accidents and the average claim is almost 47% higher than non-electric vehicles so the insurance on electric vehicles is 50-70% higher. Hertz can't get rid of their Teslas fast enough!

I have had a deposit on one for over a year now (out of state dealer) and I am first in line, at MSRP. My local dealer (Daytona Beach) has a list now and they are not talking price though to see what the market will bear once they are released; however, they always sell (and get) well over MSRP. And I care less what others think about it or any other EV since I want one. I would never get an electric sports car (my 718 Spyder is a keeper) or an electric Harley but an electric SUV is fine by me.

I'm having a hard time getting excited about it. There are just so many great EVs out there right now I'd almost rather pay the 25% import tariff to get a Yangwang or HiPhi shipped from China. If only they were as easy to get serviced as a Mercedes. *sigh*

Mercedes is abandoning the conversion to all electric and boosting efficient ICE production instead.

I can send you the link for the Hyundai Kona forum if you'd like? Might be more suited to your taste.

They’re still showing both. Also shown at CES were spare tires when they were doing the G turn:
