2019+ G63 or 2017-2018 G550 4x4^2?

Anyone here have owned both a 2017-2018 G550 4x4^2 and a 2019+ G63 (or G550)?

I have the opportunity to trade in my 2019 G63 and get a 2017 G550 4x4^2.
  • If you could only have one, which would it be?
  • For those of you that have had the 4x4^2 for a longer time, does it ever get "old" or does it still throw smile on your face every time you drive it?
  • Will I regret getting rid of the 2019 G63?
  • Which do you think will hold value better with only 300 made of the G550 4x4^2?
Some context:
  1. Drove the 4x4^2 - it's unreal sitting that high and the ride quality is amazing with the 8 shock absorbers and 7 inch sidewall tires, much better than a 2013-2018 G550 and almost equivalent to a 2019+ G63. The 2019 G550 had the best ride quality.
  2. I wasn't even considering the 4x4^2 until I took it home and realized it fits easily in my garage.
  3. I'm okay with the old tech, almost seems like a classic interior.
  4. I already have a daily, the G63 was the extra daily. I'm guessing the 4x4^2 would be driven a lot less than the 2019 G63 due to practicality.
  5. I can get a 5 year, 60k miles on top extended warranty on the 4x4^2.

Tagging @ThreeGs as I believe owns both a 2019 G63 and 2017 4x4^2.

Happy to chime in! To start, I traded my 19 G63 for a Cullinan. Paid 175k sticker, 75,000 miles later got 150k on trade. This was last May, so things have changed.

G63 is a great car - I had my fair share of gremlins but car was fun, solid, great to drive.

BUT ……

The 4x4 is my favorite of all my cars, and I have a few (incl Huracan, Cullinan, Urus, 992 TTS, Portofino). Why? Because it’s hilariously absurd and awfully fun to drive. I love the interior, the ride is spectacular and I haven’t had any maintenance problems other than a portal axle leak under warranty. Just did a brake job for 7k, but the G63 is even worse.

I loved the G63 but they’re a dime a dozen and you can always grab a new or used one if you want to pay. And if you only had one car, that’s it.

BUT ……..

If this is for fun, all day long and by miles and miles it’s the 4x4. Not even close. Brings a smile to my face EVERY SINGLE TIME I drive it.

ask me any question happy to answer.

@ThreeGs Thanks, very insightful feedback. Any comments on ownership (tips, mods you recommend, tire choice, etc.)?
  1. I've had the same gremlins on my 2019 G63 and everything was fixed under warranty and it's rock solid now, but still a lot of time at the dealership
  2. I read online 500 2017-2018 4x4^2's made worldwide and 300 made it to North America, which make it pretty rare. I think I saw somewhere that 11,000 G wagens are sold each year.
  3. The newer G63 4x4^2's have a stop drive recall, which temporarily will help with the value of the OG G550 4x4^2's.
  4. I'm leaning towards the 4x4^2!

Yeah, the OG 4x4 is certainly rarer than the current body G63 and likely even the new 4x4 at current production numbers (unless they pull them all off the road). To my eye, the OG also looks way better. I personally love no tire on the rear door - such a killer look, and the wheel arches look way bigger.

I never mod any cars so nothing to report in that regard. I’m still ok factory tires at 40,000 miles doing great - no rot or anything.

Mine is Electric Beam so even more rare, what color are you looking at?

Electric Beam is really nice. Does yours have the electric beam interior stitching too?

@ThreeGs have you ever had issues with balancing the tires? I'm getting a slight shake at 65-68 mph, but all other speeds are solid. Seems like a tire/wheel balance issue.

The interiors were all the same stitching (like gray or silver or white or whatever it is).

Never had a balance issue … it’s been aligned a few times but nothing terrible on a shake basis, except when it’s really windy because this thing isn’t built for normal driving
