Sunroof Not Flush After New Seal

I just replaced the sunroof seal on my 2003 G500. Now the sunroof won't close all the way, preventing the rear of the sunroof from sitting flush with the roof.

1. Installation matched the original seal (seams towards back, part numbers facing down)
2. I've ensured that the seal is fully seated and flush
3. Used silicon-based lube on the rear of the seal in case friction was causing the rear to catch on the seal (not the issue)
4. Replaced with the old seal, sunroof still not closing all the way.
5. Tried to "recalibrate" the sunroof by holding it open for 10+ seconds / open, close, open, hold for 10+ seconds.
6. Removal of the seal allows the sunroof to close fully. (see attachments)

Any tips or ideas? I cannot find a similar issue when searching across a variety of forums. Here is a link to see the new seal installed:

It’s been almost a year and the issue still mostly persists, but within a reasonable amount.

I don’t know if it’s an issue with superseded parts but no one has been able to offer an explanation, even when talking to experienced Mercedes mechanics.

I am having the same issue after replacing the deal. I think it might be due to the front portion of the seal. There are plastic spikes that pinched the previous seal which I’m having a hard time getting to pinch the new one. I think this is preventing the slider from going all the way forward at the last movement. What are your thoughts? Is yours sealed when it rains?

I fixed it. I did as I posted above, took the screws out completely in the front, then really pushed on the seal using something to old it about 6 inches long at a time and tightening the screws. It still didn’t work so I used a plastic trim tool and pushed the seal all around multiple times. I got the sunroof to pop up and then closed it. It didn’t close all the way so I lightly tapped it with my hand until it was flush. Left it like this for a day or so and now works fine and holds the water out.

getting it all in place is vital. Last time I did a sunroof seal. I needed a little bit of lube like you mentioned and it was hot out so after it sat in it’s home for a day it was all good. A heat gun might work well to get the seal pliable enough to go in if you are in a cold area. Granted mine was on an LX but same difference. If you have not, now might be a good time to hit the grease points with some Mercedes sunroof grease as well.
