I've attached a picture of the 2003 G55 AMG in Black Opal from the NY Auto Show this past April. I did not take these pictures, and I don't have the name of the person who sent them to me so I appologize to him in advance for not giving him credit.
I've seen both the Tectite and Black Opal G500's. In fact, I was in LA this weekend and saw at least two or three Black G500's each day I was there and they all looked really good. Of course, they are very hard to keep clean. The Tectite one's also look good, but not quite as slick as the Black...but they always look clean.

Black Opal vs. Tectite Grey
I have black opal G500 with grey leather. This color looks much better on the G with the flat surfaces compared to an E or S with curved surfaces. At night it looks black. I was at an event last night and parked next to a Tectite Grey model and preferred Opal since it looked so much darker. To me, in the dark range the choice would be Black Opal versus Black. I have three other black cars and the opal is easier to keep clean. My incoming G55 will be Brilliant Silver with charcoal leather as I am keeping the G500 for the ranch and I wanted a contrast. Final word: go black opal.
