How reliable is it?

It's a very durable vehicle, it's just the non-essential bits that can sometimes give trouble...power windows, steering vibration at certain speeds, squeaks and rattles, electronics. About the same as any other Mercedes, except it has much more rugged drive train and body so that tends to last longer and put up with more abuse. Certainly less fragile than a Range Rover, Cayenne, etc.

So long as you have the $$ for maint you can't go wrong with the G55...solid axes front and rear...3-lockers...the thing is a mini-tank.
Be prepared for a lot of attention...looked at the G500 back in early 02 for the wifee and she got so many looks on the test drive she decided not to get one.
...but in classic women style she sees a brand new X5 4.6iS in estoril blue
and is like..."I lurve that"....into the frying pan into the fire as regards attention getters but 7 years on she still loves the thing high miles and all...
